Summary

The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is a federally recognized Tribe with its ancestral homeland located in Niobrara, NE. The Tribe does not have a reservation in the classic definition; rather, the Ponca Restoration Act defined its jurisdiction as a ‘Service Delivery Area’ comprised of 15 counties throughout parts of Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. Within its Service Delivery Area, the Tribe offers a broad range of health, social, educational, and cultural services.

The primary responsibility is to coordinate and oversee the security across Tribal Buildings. The responsibilities would focus on devising strategies, appointing personnel, and implementing protocols that would ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and property.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Monitor security equipment, patrol assigned premises and ensure the security and safety of facilities, property, and staff.
  • Investigate and take the appropriate lawful action as authorized by the designated policies and procedures on accidents, incidents, trespassing, suspicious activities, safety and fire incidents.
  • Respond to incidents and disturbances using de-escalation techniques to reduce tension and prevent escalation of conflict; assess situations quickly and apply appropriate verbal and non-verbal strategies to ensure the safety and well‑being of all individuals involved, while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
  • Work with local police departments particularly when there is a security breach, and it is necessary for an outside investigation to take place.
  • Control and monitor surveillance equipment, and perform building and equipment inspections.
  • Complete daily reports, including relevant information, observations, surveillance footage reviews, and gather appropriate signatures.
  • Assist safety and emergency services with building lockdowns, evacuations, and other emergency response.
  • Aid visitors, clients, and staff in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality on all security matters and investigations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Relationships and Authority

This position does not have supervisory duties. Works under the direction of the Director of Safety & Risk. Engages with Tribal staff, service providers, visitors, and public safety agencies as required.

Working Environment and Physical Demands
  • This position is located in a professional office environment and may include duties in a health center setting.
  • Work may be stressful due to continual interaction with others.
  • Employee is subject to on occasion emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel and visitors.
  • Employee will sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during work hours.
Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Helpful, courteous attitude
  • Certification in first aid, CPR, AED required within 6 months of hire (training provided)
  • Minimum two years of security or law enforcement experience
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable.
  • Must successfully pass drug and alcohol testing, motor vehicle, education, character, and criminal background checks.
  • Able and willing to travel.

Preferred:

  • One-year experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Public Law 93-638 Indian Self‑Determination Act.
  • Proficiency with computers, and aptitude to learn new software and systems, not limited to Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience with security equipment and surveillance systems.

Preference will be given to Ponca Tribe of Nebraska members or members of a federally recognized tribe. However, all qualified individuals are eligible.
