Stephens & Smith Construction is currently seeking a full-time dynamic and motivated Equipment Operator to join our team. The Equipment Operator has responsibility for safely and efficiently operating various construction equipment. The Equipment Operator is skilled in utilizing a wide variety of construction machinery. Equipment Operators must demonstrate proven leadership and maintain and guarantee Stephens & Smith quality, work ethics, and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Able to manage various construction equipment employed in building projects.
  • Ability to operate backhoes, skid steers, small/medium, excavation machinery in a secure and suitable fashion.
  • Conduct routine equipment upkeep and safety inspections.
  • Carry out pre-operation inspections on equipment, and perform cleaning, lubrication, and refilling tasks as needed.
  • Position machinery for loading or unloading, adhering to signals from the loading crew when necessary; verify the accuracy of vehicle placement and ensure proper positioning of any specialized loading equipment.
  • Acquire a solid comprehension of matters related to ground disturbance.
  • Utilize a variety of equipment for tasks such as precise grading and finishing, creating slopes and banks, back filling, demolishing, digging ditches, loading, excavating, and stockpiling.
  • Drive equipment on public roads, ensuring vigilant awareness of the surroundings.
  • Conduct regular cleaning and maintenance to guarantee the equipment operates smoothly.
  • Respects diversity and authority and apply the Golden Rule at all times. Be open, honest, and accepting of other people’s values and needs.
  • Other construction related duties as required.

  • Ability to learn to operate all construction equipment and tools of the trade
  • Able to work around heavy equipment and follow safety practices and understand hand signals.
  • Strong time management skills and excellent attention to detail.
Physical Demands

Definitions:
Based on 8-12 hours per day

Continually 70-100% Regularly 50-70%

Periodically 20-50% Rarely – less than 20%

  • Periodically endures persistent standing and walking.
  • Continually required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Continually required to speak and listen.
  • Continually required to stoop and kneel.
  • Continually spends time working outdoors and traveling in all weather conditions.
  • Periodically lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and chemicals, etc.
  • Chemicals will be handled according to Company policy and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Continually working with high noise levels and significant vibration associated with the equipment/tools, and jobsite environmental conditions.
  • Regularly works under pressure meeting project schedules and budget guidelines.
  • Continually work with diversified work groups and willing to manage conflict in a professional manner in accordance with Company policy.
  • Continually able to work eight to ten hour work days each week and occasional weekends.
  • Continually utilize specific vision abilities required to perform the essential functions of the job, i.e., close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Condition of employment may be determined on employee qualifications and approval of (post offer) drug testing, skill assessment testing, and background check.

Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED is a required
  • A minimum of six months previous work history in the field of construction or vocational training is preferred but not required
  • Capability to adhere to the safety protocols and guidelines set by the Company, including, but not limited to, wearing necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, vest, hard hat, and safety glasses.
  • Having the ability to collaborate and work effectively with diverse personalities.
  • Personal vehicle for transportation required
  • Displaying robust work ethics, including punctuality, reliability, and honesty. Maintaining a positive, cheerful, and respectful attitude both in person and during telephone interactions. Adhering to Company guidelines regarding attire, refraining from wearing any clothing, hats, or accessories that are defamatory or offensive.
  • Ability to work on heights, ladders, scaffolds, and utilize fall protection.
  • Capable of using and possessing the following tools: tape measure, utility knife, hammer, and various small tools commonly used in the trade. Willingness to acquire proficiency in operating all additional construction equipment and tools, including skid loaders
