Position Overview
Forge is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to support the financial operations of our growing commercial construction business. This role will report directly to the Controller and play a key leadership role in overseeing day-to-day accounting functions, with direct management responsibility for the Project Accountant. The ideal candidate has strong construction accounting experience and is highly detail-oriented. This position is critical to ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective job cost tracking, and strong internal controls across all projects.
This position is onsite Monday – Thursday in Addison TX with the option to work from home on Fridays.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Controller with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal controls
- Oversee job cost accounting, WIP schedules, cost-to-complete analysis, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
- Review project budgets, forecasts, and variances; monitor job profitability and identify risks
- Manage and mentor the Project Accountant; review project-related AP, AR, pay applications, retainage, and lien waivers
- Partner with Project Managers to resolve billing, cost, and contract-related issues
- Assist with cash flow forecasting, vendor and subcontractor payables, and payment prioritization
- Support audits, tax filings, lender reporting, and compliance with contract, insurance, and bonding requirements
- Drive process improvements and optimize accounting systems and construction ERP tools to support growth
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
- 5–8 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in construction accounting
- Prior experience in a commercial general contracting environment strongly preferred
- Experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff
- Strong understanding of job cost accounting, WIP schedules, and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Proficiency in Sage 300 CRE construction accounting software
- Advanced Excel skills
