Tax Auditor 1 – Fuels Tax Auditor Oregon Department of Transportation Finance & Budget Division – Financial Services Branch Fuels Tax Group Salem The role

As a fuels tax auditor, you will learn to apply tax laws, review financial records and communicate clearly with a wide range of audiences. You will assist with audits, help prepare reports, work with experienced auditors and support internal and external customers. You will build skills to meet deadlines and work independently.

A day in the life
  • Conduct office and field audits of less complex licensed motor vehicle fuel dealers, use fuel sellers and users, work solo or with other auditors and assist senior staff on more complex audits.
  • Apply auditing standards impartially and unaccompanied in all audits.
  • Investigate business operations, accounting systems and internal controls to assess reliability, risk and reporting accuracy.
  • Review prior audits, payment history and other sources to recommend the appropriate audit scope for approval.
  • Perform required audit procedures to verify fuel receipts, sales, imports, exports, inventory movement and meter readings.
  • Examine general ledger accounts to ensure accurate tax accruals and reconcile taxes paid with amounts reported to ODOT.
  • Use sampling methods and other testing to determine correct tax due.
  • Communicate audit findings, reporting errors and legal requirements to licensees and recommending improvements to enhance compliance.
  • Prepare audit adjustments, work papers, written audit reports and exhibits, and provide factual testimony.
  • Provide advisory support, assist with complex audits, review refund claims, participate in special projects, and stay current on fuels tax laws and industry trends.
  • Work is performed in an office and in the field; field conditions vary.
  • Extensive travel required; overnight travel up to six weeks a year may be required.
  • May lift up to 30 pounds and push, pull or move storage boxes or records.

Four years of work experience in tax compliance, tax preparation, tax auditing, audit defense, professional accounting, providing law training, or developing tax forms or instructions;

OR

An equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience.

Note:

A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field will substitute for up to three years of experience.
