The Tennessee Audit Division is currently seeking qualified candidates for Tax Auditor Special Intermediate openings with possible locations in Chicago, IL;

The ideal candidate should be flexible in working from home or working in an office as required.
Salary is based on location and experience.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing or relative field and two years of professional-level experience in accounting or auditing.
Substitution of an Associate's Degree and Experience for the Bachelor's Degree:
An associate's degree with a major in accounting and one year of experience in professional-level accounting or auditing may be substituted for the required bachelor's degree.
Substitution of Education and Licensure for
Experience:
Additional graduate coursework in accounting or business administration at the rate of thirty-six quarter hours, licensure as a Public Accountant, or licensure as a Certified Public Accountant may substitute for one year of the required experience.
Substitution of Experience for
Education:
Qualifying full-time professional accounting or auditing experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years; OR one year of experience as a Tax Auditing Associate, with the Tennessee Department of Revenue.
Necessary Special
Qualifications:
Applicants for this class must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Following the appointment, they must reside outside the State of Tennessee.
Examination Method:
Education and Experience, 100%, for Preferred Service positions.
Under general supervision, this classification is responsible for professional auditing work of average difficulty involving the examination and audit of tax documents of out-of-state corporations doing business in Tennessee to determine tax liability. An employee in this class is assigned to a region outside the State of Tennessee and travels between several states in the assigned region to conduct complex tax audits, including, but not limited to sales and use tax, franchise/excise and/or business tax as assigned, of corporations doing business in Tennessee.
This class differs from the general Tax Auditor series in that incumbents of the latter reside in state to conduct tax audits. This class differs from the Tax Auditor Special Advanced in that incumbents of the latter perform professional auditing work of considerable difficulty and lead Tax Auditor Special Intermediates.
- 1. Uses Tennessee state resources, systems, and other available information to thoroughly research taxpayer business activity and relative laws, rules, and procedures.
- 2. Communicates with taxpayer on technical issues on the audit and taxability. Advises management on audit status and issues as they arise.
- 3. Collects and reviews taxpayer books and records in accordance with applicable state law, attorney general opinions, and established administrative practices. Computes tax liability plus interest, penalties, or adjustments.
- 4. Prepares reports of audit findings including describing the steps followed, records reviewed, results of the audit and recommendations for future compliance. Learns to cite Department of Revenue position in accordance with state tax law, rules and regulations and relevant court decisions, and notes any objections from the taxpayer.
- 5. Conducts closing conferences with the taxpayer and/or their representative upon completion of the audit, reviewing the reports of audit findings, answering any questions, and explaining the next steps in the process.
- 6. Manages work and scheduling to meet the budgeted audit plan and assigned audit projects.
