The Role Reed Accountancy & Finance is exclusively partnering with a well-established accountancy practice to recruit an experienced Senior Accounts Assistant from a practice background. This is a varied and hands-on position, offering a high degree of autonomy and flexibility, including a predominantly remote working arrangement. You will take ownership of your workload, working independently while contributing to a collaborative and supportive team environment.

The firm specialises in supporting a diverse portfolio of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and is known for its flexible working culture and employee-focused approach. A successful candidate will bring extensive experience working with a broad range of smaller clients, rather than a limited number of large corporate entities, reflecting the firm’s core client base.
Key Responsibilities Manage end-to-end payroll processing (a central aspect of the role) Prepare year-end statutory accounts and monthly accounts Assist with the production of management accounts, including:
Posting journals (accruals, prepayments, and adjustments) Conducting balance sheet reconciliations Producing profit and loss reports Supporting month-end close processes Oversee bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients, including:
Maintaining accurate financial records Performing bank reconciliations Managing sales and purchase ledgers Prepare and submit VAT returns, ensuring full compliance with HMRC regulations:
Reviewing transactions and resolving discrepancies Working across various VAT schemes Utilise accounting software such as Sage and Xero (experience with IRIS is advantageous) Provide ad hoc support to the wider team as required About You Proven experience working within an accountancy practice is essential ACA or ACCA qualified and above Strong expertise in payroll processing Confident working independently in a remote setting Self-motivated, organised, and proactive in approach Experience managing a portfolio of SME clients Hands-on experience with bookkeeping and VAT returns What’s on Offer Competitive salary of £60,000 – £65,000 Flexible working arrangements Remote-first working environment Opportunity to take full ownership of your workload within a trusting environment Working Pattern:
Initially, the role will require two days per week in the Cheltenham office. This will reduce to approximately one day per month once you are fully established in the role.
