Tax Accountant, Tax Manager, Tax Advisor
Are you an experienced personal tax professional looking for a role where you can take ownership of your clients while still having the support of an experienced tax team around you?
We're working with a well-established independent accountancy practice in Leeds to recruit a Personal Tax Senior / Senior Tax Accountant.
We're deliberately keeping an open mind on job titles and qualifications. You might currently be working as a Personal Tax Senior, Tax Senior, Tax Adviser, Tax Accountant or Assistant Manager or perhaps you're an experienced practice accountant whose role includes a significant amount of personal tax.
What matters most is that you have good hands-on personal tax experience gained within accountancy practice and are comfortable dealing directly with clients.
The roleYou’ll take responsibility for a varied portfolio of personal tax clients, including individuals, company directors and clients of the wider accounts team.
A large part of the role is personal tax compliance. You’ll manage the Self Assessment process from start to finish, obtaining information from clients, preparing accurate returns, dealing with queries and making sure deadlines are met.
You’ll have support from experienced senior colleagues when you need it, while having the autonomy to manage your own clients and workload.
Depending on your existing experience, you’ll also have the opportunity to become involved in trusts, estates, partnerships, Capital Gains Tax and more complex tax matters.
There is advisory work within the team too. You don’t need to arrive as an advisory tax specialist the important thing is having strong compliance foundations and the ability to recognise when a client’s circumstances may require further tax advice.
What you’ll be doing- Managing your own portfolio of personal tax clients
- Preparing and submitting Self Assessment tax returns
- Taking ownership of the tax return process from start to finish
- Liaising directly with clients and HMRC
- Reviewing tax calculations, coding notices, statements and repayments
- Dealing with Capital Gains Tax matters where appropriate
- Preparing trust, estate and partnership returns depending on your experience
- Identifying potential tax issues and opportunities for further advice
- Working alongside the Tax Manager and Tax Partners on more complex matters
- Building strong, long-term client relationships
- Supporting more junior members of the team where appropriate
- Managing deadlines and your own workload effectively
- Assisting with new client onboarding and relevant AML requirements
We’re interested in speaking to people with solid personal tax experience gained within an accountancy practice.
You don’t necessarily need to be CTA qualified and we’re not looking for somebody who already knows absolutely everything.
You could be a strong Personal Tax Senior looking for your next move, an experienced Tax Adviser wanting more responsibility, an Assistant Manager who still enjoys hands‑on client work, or a practice accountant whose experience has included significant responsibility for personal tax.
Ideally, you’ll have:
- Several years’ personal tax experience within accountancy practice
- Good practical knowledge of Self Assessment and personal tax compliance
- Experience managing your own clients or taking significant responsibility for a portfolio
- Confidence communicating directly with clients
- The ability to organise your workload and work to tax deadlines
- A proactive and professional approach
Experience of trusts, estates, partnerships, CGT or tax planning would be useful, but we don’t expect every candidate to have experience across every area.
ACA, ACCA, CTA, ATT or similar qualifications would be welcomed, but relevant practical experience is equally important.
What’s on offer?- Salary up to £50,000 depending on experience
- One day per week working from home
- Free on-site parking
- Established and supportive tax team
- Direct client responsibility and genuine autonomy
- Opportunity to broaden your technical tax experience
- Exposure to advisory work alongside experienced Tax Managers and Partners
- Ongoing professional development
- Friendly, independent practice environment
