Overview

The London Borough of Harrow is seeking a Registrar to join the Registration Services team within Legal & Governance. This public-facing role offers an opportunity to support residents during some of the most significant moments in their lives, including births, deaths, marriages, civil partnerships and citizenship ceremonies. Based at Harrow Council offices, with ceremonies taking place at the Harrow Pavilion and external venues across the borough, the postholder will ensure services are delivered professionally, accurately and in accordance with statutory requirements.

As a Registrar, you will be responsible for conducting ceremonies, taking notices of marriage and civil partnerships, registering life events and providing advice and guidance to residents and stakeholders. You will maintain accurate records, process applications, issue certificates and liaise with organisations including the General Register Office, Home Office, other registration districts and coroners. The role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to work independently, particularly when conducting ceremonies and registrations outside standard office hours.

This is a rewarding and varied position that combines technical knowledge, customer service and public engagement. You will play a key role in ensuring compliance with legislation while delivering a welcoming and compassionate service to people from diverse backgrounds. The successful candidate will be confident in managing sensitive situations, adaptable to changing priorities and committed to maintaining the highest professional standards during important and often emotional life events

About You
  • Experience delivering excellent customer service in a public-facing environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage with individuals and large groups
  • Ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with sensitive, emotional or complex situations
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in records and statutory documentation
  • Ability to work independently, make sound decisions and resolve issues effectively under pressure
  • Experience managing competing priorities and adapting to changing schedules and operational demands
  • Confidence in conducting public ceremonies or presenting to groups, or the ability to develop these skills through training
  • A commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism and high standards of customer care at all times
