Assistant Plant Manager

Location: Thurnscoe

Company: Balfour Beatty

About the Role:

We have a fantastic opportunity for an Assistant Plant Manager to join our Asset & Technology Solutions team based in Thurnscoe.

As part of a specialist business unit providing survey and communications equipment, drones, machine control solutions, HGVs, cranes, piling equipment, fire and security services, suction excavation, modular buildings and driver risk management, you'll play a key role in ensuring our logistics and transport operations run safely, efficiently and compliantly.

Reporting into the Plant Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day operation of logistics, fleet and driver resources, ensuring equipment is mobilised on time, routes are effectively planned and transport performance is continually improved.

What you'll be doing

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate all delivery and collection activities for survey, communications and plant assets.
  • Ensure equipment arrives on site safely, on time and in full.
  • Lead and supervise delivery drivers, including daily task allocation, route planning, performance management and compliance monitoring.
  • Develop and maintain efficient transport schedules that maximise fleet utilisation while minimising operational costs and downtime.
  • Ensure compliance with transport legislation, driver hours regulations, vehicle inspection requirements and company policies.
  • Coordinate fleet servicing, maintenance, MOTs, repairs and defect management to maintain vehicle availability.
  • Monitor transport performance against key operational KPIs, including delivery performance, response times, vehicle utilisation and customer satisfaction.
  • Manage urgent hire requirements and prioritise operational demands effectively.
  • Monitor off-hires and asset returns to maximise equipment availability and minimise lost revenue opportunities.
  • Support and supervise Hire Controllers, ensuring hire contracts, quotations, extensions, transfers and off-hires are processed accurately and efficiently.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across transport and logistics operations.
Who we're looking for
  • Previous experience within transport, logistics, plant hire or a similar operational environment.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management abilities.
  • Proven problem-solving and decision-making capability.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, customers and stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and managing competing priorities.
  • Strong geographical knowledge and route planning capability.
  • Good understanding of transport compliance and fleet management requirements.

Desirable

  • Sales experience within the sector.
  • Knowledge of survey and communications equipment.
  • Familiarity with robotics, drones or machine control technologies.
