Healthcare Actuary; US-Remote

We are looking for an actuary to support both data analytics and tool building. In this role, you will serve as a critical resource supporting the ongoing development of Handl's tool suite, translating complex healthcare data into actionable insights for employers, brokers, and health plans. You will move beyond traditional reporting to help design the logic and algorithms that power our network analytics tools, alternative health plan modeling capabilities, and cost-containment tools, powered by a deep understanding of both new and traditional sources of healthcare data.

This is a unique opportunity for a self-starter who is comfortable navigating ambiguity and wants to bridge the gaps between actuarial science, data science, and product development. You will work directly with our Chief Actuary and actuarial team, Product team, and Engineering team to operationalize actuarial principles, ensuring our platform accurately models network cost comparisons, plan design evaluation, provider quality scoring, and member behavior modeling.

The role combines hands-on healthcare data analysis and validation with supporting the development and refinement of actuarial methodologies, algorithms, and tools. You will work closely with senior actuarial leadership while contributing your own analytical insights and problem-solving skills, with opportunities to take on greater ownership and independence as you grow in the role.

• Data Mastery:
  Validate and analyze healthcare transparency data and large medical claims datasets, investigating data quality, inconsistencies, and limitations to determine appropriate exclusions, adjustments, or workarounds. Use these insights to optimize how data is used in identifying savings opportunities and promoting efficient use of healthcare resources.
• Provider Scoring:
  Evaluate provider cost and quality metrics to support the development of tiered networks and high-performance steering strategies, including episode-based claims bundling.
• Network Comparison:
  Refine and expand carrier network cost comparison tools and capabilities.
• Plan Design Analytics:
  Model the impact of changes in health plan design and perform precise calculations of Plan Actuarial Values (AV).

  Partner closely with the actuarial, Product, and Engineering teams to translate actuarial principles into user-friendly software tools and scalable algorithms, supporting the development and refinement of specific methodologies and tool components.
• Actuarial Review:
  Serve as a primary resource reviewing output from new models and algorithms to ensure results are reasonable, explainable, and aligned with actuarial expectations. Utilize critical thinking skills when results deviate from expectations to identify drivers and recommend corrective actions as necessary.
• Healthcare Transparency Data SME:
  Develop deep subject matter expertise related to healthcare transparency datasets, both provider and payer. Utilize this knowledge to identify gaps and opportunities related to Handl's use of this data, to fully optimize the value of these datasets and position Handl as an industry leader in healthcare transparency-based tools and analytics.
• Behavioral Modeling:
  Apply studies on benefit incentives and member decision-support tools to predict how product features will drive utilization shifts and cost savings.

• Stakeholder Presentation:
  Prepare written presentations and reports summarizing results of complex studies, suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences. Participate in meetings with senior leadership and clients as a technical subject matter expert to discuss findings and…
