Head of Product
Instrumentl is a grants management platform and system of record for grant-funded organizations. It brings together grant discovery, applications, award compliance, and grant operations into a single shared platform. More than 6,000 nonprofits use it, ranging from local community groups and animal shelters to state and county governments and universities. The company is cash-flow positive and backed by Y Combinator.
The roleInstrumentl is hiring a Head of Product to lead its product managers as the company builds toward becoming an AI-native operating system for grant-funded organizations. The role reports directly to co-founder Angela Braren. You would personally own a core product area while also growing and developing the PM team. This is a hands-on leadership position at a profitable company that is still in an early stage of its growth.
Whatyou would do
- Be one of the strongest customer voices in the company and develop your PMs into strong customer advocates as well.
- Own customer outcomes and account engagement across product areas.
- Take new, early products built by the founders and lead them through launch, broader customer adoption, and ongoing improvement.
- Get close to individual customers through calls, site visits, and conferences, and turn those insights into product decisions.
- Scope and sequence work by finding the smallest end-to-end version that works, shipping it, and iterating.
- Own a core product area yourself (likely the GrantOS platform), from roadmap through to shipped work.
- Prototype and build alongside engineering and design, using AI tools to move from idea to working product quickly.
- Help the team build effective AI agents, including eval loops, golden datasets, and clear measures of output quality.
- Lead and develop PMs with clear principles for decision-making and shipping.
- Raise product velocity while keeping quality high, and bring the team along on AI-native ways of working.
- Partner with co-founders to turn company product vision into a roadmap the whole organization can execute.
- Partner with engineering, design, sales, and customer success on cross-team work, especially shared platform capabilities.
Required:
- 8+ years in product management, including owning a whole product or most of a core product end to end in B2B SaaS.
- A track record of taking a product from 0 to 1 and then scaling it, with customer or business results to show for it.
- You still build hands-on: you prototype, write specs, and ship products yourself, not only through others.
- Experience managing and developing PMs, including hiring, coaching, and performance management.
- A track record of setting strategy across multiple product areas, making investment tradeoffs, and delivering measurable customer and business outcomes.
Nice to have:
- Founder or founding PM experience.
- Shipped AI or LLM-powered features in production, including evals and ways to measure output quality.
- Built platform or system-of-record products that other teams depend on.
- Vertical SaaS experience, especially with nonprofit, government, or compliance-heavy customers.
- Experience with both product-led and sales-led growth.
The role is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is a hybrid position with approximately one day per week in the Oakland office and around 25% travel.
Pay and benefitsThe target base salary range for US-based candidates is $260,000 - $325,000, plus equity. Final compensation is determined by experience, skillset, scope, interview performance, and geographic location.
Benefits include 100% covered health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (50% for dependents), generous PTO including parental leave, a 401(k), a company laptop and home-office stipend, and bi-annual company retreats.
