Role DescriptionThe Mechanical Estimator is a full-time, hybrid role based in Cardiff, with flexibility for some work from home. This role is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for mechanical building services, including HVAC, plumbing, and associated systems, in line with project specifications and industry standards. Day-to-day tasks include reviewing drawings and tender documents, performing quantity take-offs, obtaining and assessing supplier and subcontractor quotations, and producing accurate cost plans and tender submissions.
The Mechanical Estimator will collaborate closely with project managers, design teams, and procurement to support bid strategies, value engineering options, and risk assessments. The role also involves maintaining up-to-date cost data, contributing to budget reviews, and supporting ongoing projects with variations and cost reporting.
- Strong mechanical estimating experience within construction or building services, including HVAC and plumbing systems.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
- Experience using estimating and quantity take-off software, as well as MS Excel and other standard office tools.
- Good commercial awareness, including understanding of cost drivers, supply chain pricing, and margin management.
- Relevant technical qualification in mechanical engineering or building services (e.g., HNC/HND, degree, or equivalent experience).
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy in cost planning.
- Experience working to deadlines in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple tenders or projects concurrently.
- Knowledge of UK construction standards, regulations, and health and safety requirements is advantageous.
- Previous experience in a similar estimator role within a national or regional contractor is beneficial.
