Job Description Overview Atkins Realis is a leading global consultancy with over 80 years of design, engineering and project management expertise. With us, you’ll join a team that asks questions and dares to see things differently while engineering a better future for our planet and its people. We are seeking to recruit a Health & Safety in Design/CDM Consultant to join our team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to work for a dynamic and sociable company and make an impact.
You would be based in our Cardiff office but also have the opportunity to work from home and from our other offices in the Midlands, Southwest and Wales. Our clients are varied so a typical working week would include managing your diary to be on client sites, in the office, or working from home. We are looking for a collaborative and motivated CDM Consultant to deliver a quality service for our clients.
Under CDM 2015 our CDM services focus on assisting designers with the Principal Designer role (both in-house and with our clients) and assisting clients to comply with their duties.
You may be a chartered civil engineer or construction professional looking to specialise in H&S, or a H&S specialist with a good working knowledge of the construction industry.
Your role Advise clients, project teams, and designers on compliance with CDM 2015 Regulations and broader Health & Safety requirements throughout the project lifecycle. Support and undertake Principal Designer (PD) responsibilities, ensuring effective coordination and management of design-related health and safety risks. Conduct design risk reviews and facilitate the identification, elimination, and mitigation of foreseeable construction, maintenance, and operational risks. Provide expert guidance on CDM design risk management best practices, ensuring compliance with legal and industry standards.
Assist clients in meeting their statutory duties under CDM 2015, including the preparation and review of relevant project documentation. Perform site inspections, workplace audits, and compliance assessments to evaluate health and safety performance and identify improvement opportunities. Prepare clear, professional, and technically robust reports, risk assessments, audit findings, and advisory documents. Deliver Health & Safety and CDM training, workshops, and awareness sessions to clients, project stakeholders, and internal teams.
Support multidisciplinary project teams with specialist H&S expertise and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives. Develop and maintain strong client relationships while staying updated on evolving legislation, industry trends, and best practices in construction health and safety.
- Strong knowledge of CDM 2015 regulations, construction health & safety legislation, and industry best practices.
- Experience in CDM consultancy, Health & Safety, construction, engineering, or a related discipline.
- Proven expertise in design risk management, CDM design reviews, hazard identification, and implementation of risk mitigation strategies.
- Good understanding of construction design principles, building regulations, construction methods, materials, and site operations.
- Knowledge of key construction safety areas including temporary works, fire safety, asbestos management, demolition, scaffolding, lifting operations, and working at height.
- Professional qualification or membership such as IOSH Chartership (or working towards) and NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent H&S certification.
- Experience conducting health & safety audits, site inspections, compliance assessments, and workplace reviews within construction environments.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and client-facing consultancy skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships.
- Ability to prepare high-quality technical reports, risk assessments, and compliance documentation, with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience delivering H&S/CDM training, knowledge of ISO 45001 and integrated management systems, and the ability to work autonomously while collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.
