The New York Times is looking for a news assistant to work on its National Desk, a team that leads the newsroom’s coverage of the United States across all Times platforms. The role is an in‑office position based in New York City, requiring regular office attendance four days a week, with some flexibility for remote work as directed by the department.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide range of operational and clerical duties essential to the work of the desk.
  • Research and produce daily news scans to keep editors abreast of developments the desk may be interested in covering.
  • Work with editors to update story budgets and track stories through editing and publication.
  • Take detailed notes during meetings with editors.
  • Update and communicate the weekly whereabouts of reporters.
  • Track publication data sets on story forms and assist with research for audience and strategy projects.
  • Help maintain breaking news documents and manage the tracking of live feeds.
  • Assess freelancer availability for news assignments and help maintain department resource documentation.
  • Ensure smooth communication between editors, reporters, photographers and freelancers.
  • Compile National’s published stories for promotion in the California Today newsletter and help with the layout of weather pages.
  • Help maintain a calendar of upcoming events, elections and anniversaries.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • Report to the Deputy Director, News Operations.
Basic Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Times style or the ability to absorb and apply it quickly.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.A. or B.S. degree.
  • Strong writing, editing and production skills.

This position is represented by the News Guild of NY.

The annual base pay for this role is between $67,626 and $68,000.
