Texas and its government have an outsized impact on national politics. The New York Times is looking for an experienced correspondent to produce scoops and revelatory analysis about Texas politics. You are deeply sourced in Texas and can drive the conversation about the region’s politics for a national audience. You will bring ideas for engaging stories in various formats that explain the beat for readers in Texas, across the country or around the world.
You should have a clear record of scoops and the ability to write with authority. You will embrace a true range of stories and turnaround times, seeing news moments as opportunities to demonstrate expertise through clear and vivid writing. You are collaborative with colleagues.
This is a hybrid position based in Texas and includes some attendance in the office per departmental guidance. This position is represented by the News Guild of NY.
Responsibilities- Cultivate a deep bench of sources that drive scoops and power news coverage
- Write with authority, clarity, independently and on deadline
- Translate Texas politics for a national audience
- Monitor news and deliver a steady stream of story ideas that explain the region
- Produce exclusive stories that demonstrate beat authority
- Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom based in Texas
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and commitment to our mission
- Report to the Texas Editor on the National Desk
- Basic Qualifications:
- 10+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization
- Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment
- A portfolio that includes politics, news, enterprise and analysis
- Experience covering news in Texas
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with new storytelling approaches
