Position OverviewThe Conversation U.S. (TCUS), an independent non‑profit media organization, publishes daily news analysis, commentary, and research written by academics and edited by journalists. This full‑time senior editor will cover a wide range of economic and business topics—including Federal Reserve policy, unemployment, consumer trends, and economic inequality—by commissioning and editing articles from scholars for a general‑audience readership.
The role offers a hybrid work model, with remote work nationwide and in‑person options for Boston and New York office locations. Candidates must have at least 15 years of journalism and editorial experience and a bachelor’s degree.
Key Responsibilities- Work closely with the Managing Editor to build story coverage aligned with interests and past experience.
- Stay abreast of key economic, business and financial news, generating story ideas for scholars.
- Commission 3–4 stories weekly from academic experts, editing them for a general readership with a focus on breaking news.
- Advance the Diversity Initiative by commissioning scholars from women and minority groups.
- Maintain clear, timely, professional communication with authors and other editors.
- Participate in brainstorming and planning discussions across desks and with Conversation editors in other countries.
- Attend key economic and business conferences.
- Reporting skills and news judgment to generate ideas and pursue new research.
- Team‑focused newsroom collaboration and learning mindset.
- Careful commissioning to avoid conflicts of interest and highlight diverse voices.
- Ability to work with scholars to simplify research, line‑edit copy, and fact‑check.
- Strong grammar, story structure, and visual storytelling skills.
- Exceptional organization, attention to detail, and willingness to seek help.
- Proficiency with house style, CMS, and digital production.

- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum 15 years of journalism work experience.
- Exceptional organizational skills, meticulousness, insight, and clarity of expression.
- Ability to work at a fast pace, highly productive, independently and remotely.
- Skill at developing story ideas of interest to the public.
- Experience in online content production and learning new CMS.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
