The Opportunity:

The Telegram is seeking a multimedia journalist to join our team in St. John's, NL. Yourmain focus will be covering news stories across Newfoundland and Labrador, with a focus on political and health reporting.

You'llidentifyand explore issues that are important to the people of our province,explaining theproblemand seeking potential solutions.

Our ideal candidate is skilled at writing features as well as web reporting on immediate issues. We're looking for someone who is proficient at storytelling and able to write articles that can condense information in a way that explains or analyzes what's happening for our online readers.

Driven by the demands of speed and online readership growth, the multimedia journalist must flexibly juggle assignments as well as generate ideas to attract and keep readers returning to  daily. A strong understanding of newsletters, SEO and best practices for web is considered a bonus, as is familiarity with platforms like Word Press, but support and training will be provided.

Our candidate is a team player, willing to work with colleagues to do investigative pieces or larger projects, and able to work independently, as this is a work-from-home role. The candidate must be able to cover events in person as needed within St. John's.

The ability to use digital tools to identify news needs and maximize ways to meet them is critical to the position, as is working closely with the deputy editor and assistant news editor.

The position is a unionized job, working with a remote newsroom, beginning as soon as possible.

Whatyou'lldo:
  • Tell the stories ofpeople in Newfoundland and Labrador, with an emphasis on political and health reporting.
  • Report andwrite stories for our website, as well as tailoring content to meet the varying needs of our platforms.
  • Skilled with using social media to find sources, storyideasand topics of interest to the community each day and respond to explain why these talking pieces are important to NL
  • Strong phone skills, asyou may reporting from a distance.
  • Knowledge and experience filing access to information requests considered an asset.
  • Respond quickly to stories that are important to our readers, turning around pieces that will help grow readership online by providing context,analysis and explanations.
  • Initiating and developing ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects.
  • Cultivating sources and establishing expertise in order to break stories.
  • Working with digital teams to create other multimedia elements.
Who you are:
  • Experience at a news organization in a deadline-oriented reporting/writing role.
  • Fluency in digital platforms, multimediajournalismand social media.
  • Ability to work quickly and independently, meet multiple deadlines, and make efficient decisions.
  • Ability to work constructively as part of a newsroom team.
Compensation:

Employment offers presented to the selected candidate are based on a combination of qualifications, experience, responsibilities of the role and the candidate's location.

This is a unionized position subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement. The starting salary listed in this job posting is based on the Year 1 rate outlined in the collective agreement. Offers will be made based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Base Salary: $721.81 weekly
