Social Media & Graphic Design Intern – Up Here

Location – Remote

Company Description

Have an eye for design, a way with words and ideas for making people stop scrolling? We’d love to hear from you.

Up Here Publishing is an Indigenous-owned publishing company based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Through Up Here and Up Here Business, we share the people, places and stories that make Canada’s North extraordinary.

Job Description

We’re looking for a creative social media and design intern to help bring those stories to more readers, grow our online presence and support our marketing projects. You’ll work alongside our publishing and creative team, gaining hands‑on experience in magazine publishing.

The position

  • Paid, 16-week internship
  • 40 hours per week
  • Location/work arrangement: work from home
  • Hourly wage: $19.50/h

What you’ll do

  • Create and schedule content for our social media channels.
  • Design graphics for social posts, promotions, and potently assist with advertising if needed.
  • Help promote subscriptions, upcoming issues, contests and special projects.
  • Engage with our online community and track how content performs.
  • Work with our team to keep our branding consistent and our content fresh.
Qualifications

What you’ll bring

  • Strong writing skills and an eye for layout, typography and design.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and content creation.
  • Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite or similar design tools.
  • Good organization, attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
  • An interest in northern communities, culture and storytelling.

Experience creating short videos or managing social accounts is an asset. School projects, personal creative work and volunteer experience count—your portfolio doesn’t need to come with a long résumé.

Program eligibility

This position is supported through the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association’s 2026–27 Internship Program. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be within five years of completing their post‑secondary education.
  • Identify as a member of an equity‑seeking group, including Indigenous, Black, racialized or ethno‑religious minority communities, people with disabilities, or 2

    SLGBTQI+ communities.
