Project Associate/Senior Project Associate – Planning, Engagement, and Design

We are seeking an entry‑to‑mid‑level Planning & Design Project Associate or Senior Project Associate to join our team of professionals in our Berkeley, CA, or Sacramento, CA office. MIG supports a hybrid work‑from‑home/remote and in‑office schedule and encourages in‑person work for learning and team‑building opportunities.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate as part of a supportive, cross‑office, cross‑discipline team that plans and designs with communities of all sizes across the United States for public and private‑sector clients.
  • Support planners, designers, and project managers in all aspects of project design and implementation, including community engagement, meeting design and facilitation, research and analysis, technical and policy writing, creation of highly visual materials, reports, content analysis, project administration, and client interaction.
  • Work on a range of exciting, broad‑reaching projects, including comprehensive, specific, downtown, and corridor plans; zoning codes; and development entitlement review for public agencies. Engage with the local community and use modern tools for mapping and analysis.

MIG works on projects nationwide; some travel, evening, and weekend work may be required for community engagement, site evaluations, client meetings, or to meet deadlines. MIG encourages a sustainable and healthy work‑life balance, and these excess hours can be offset during the week when possible.

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public policy, or a related field (a Master’s degree is a plus).
  • For a Project Associate: at least one year of relevant work experience (internships OK). For a Senior Project Associate: at least three years of relevant experience in land use planning, urban planning, urban design, policy, community engagement, master planning or a closely related field with an understanding of and commitment to quality, inclusive, community‑centered planning and design.
  • Ability to produce high‑quality work products, including planning documents, graphics, maps, and charts.
  • Excellent research, writing, analysis, document presentation, and written and verbal communication skills. Graphic design proficiencies are a plus.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated interest in the intersection of design, planning, and equity and ability to develop collaborative, respectful relationships with community members, organizations, and partners.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of land use planning at city, county, regional, and state level.
  • Software proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite is required.
  • Experience in ArcGIS Pro and/or Sketch Up is a plus.
  • Willingness and initiative to pitch in, adapt, and collaborate as a teammate.
  • Confident presentation and public speaking skills in both small and large group discussions.
  • Local or willing to relocate to the Berkeley or Sacramento area to participate in work directly with our teams and clients.
  • Bilingual with Spanish or other non‑English language skills is a plus.
