Job Summary
The System Medical Director, Hospitalists is a key clinical leader responsible for driving performance, quality, and strategic alignment across hospitalist programs within the health system. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, efficient, and patient-centered care by providing tactical oversight and fostering a culture of clinical excellence. The Medical Director partners with administrative leaders, site medical directors, and hospital leadership to align hospitalist services with organizational goals and system-wide clinical strategy.
EssentialResponsibilities Strategic Clinical Leadership
- Lead the implementation of system-wide hospitalist strategies that align with organizational goals.
- Serve as the clinical lead for hospitalist initiatives and service line development.
- Collaborate with administrative leaders on planning, performance, contracting, and service growth.
- Promote evidence-based practices and standardization of care across all hospitalist sites.
- Monitor key clinical metrics (e.g., readmissions, LOS, patient outcomes) and drive improvement efforts.
- Engage hospitalists in quality, safety, and value-based initiatives.
- Foster a collaborative culture grounded in accountability, clinical excellence, and team-based care.
- Support the professional development and leadership of site-based medical directors.
- Align clinical and operational goals in partnership with administrative and hospital leadership.
- Support integration across specialties, transitions of care, and value-based care strategies.
- Maintain an active clinical practice, preferably as a hospitalist, to remain grounded in daily operations.
- Serve as a role model in delivering high-quality care, professionalism, and patient experience.
Licensure/Certification
- Active medical license in any U.S. state required; licensure in Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, or South Carolina required if practicing clinically in those markets.
- Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
- 5–7 years of hospitalist clinical experience.
- Minimum 2–3 years in a physician leadership role (e.g., Medical Director, Chief Medical Officer).
- Proven track record in clinical quality improvement and healthcare operations.
- Experience with value-based care models and population health is preferred.
- This is a remote position and may require travel to health system sites.
- The role involves a combination of administrative responsibilities and clinical practice.
- Flexibility in work hours may be needed to support clinical teams across different hospitals.
