Overview
We are advertising a Consultant post in the newly formed Department of General Internal Medicine at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The role combines GIM with a specialty, supporting a collaborative internal medicine service with flexible working patterns.
Each post is 1.0 WTE, with 0.5 WTE GIM and 0.5 WTE in a specialty. GIM responsibilities include inpatient care on ward 513 with a one week in six pattern (including weekends). The remaining five weeks are flexible, focusing on palliative care sessions with GIM activity including a weekly MDT, educational activities, governance, and SPA time. There is no evening or overnight on call attached to these posts, and flexible working on non-ward weeks is welcomed.
Detailed job plan below.
The 0.5 WTE palliative medicine consultant component will be based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, working with the Supportive and Palliative Care team led by the designated lead; the team operates across this site and accepts referrals across adult medicine.
The post holder may assist in supporting team members on other sites across the trust when required. Weekend on call work in GIM is considered in the overall commitment to the palliative medicine on-call rota (currently 1:9).
Main dutiesThe post holder will support team members, within a multidisciplinary structure, and share clinical responsibility for the department's clinical work. There are opportunities to take on additional responsibilities in education leadership, governance, and rota coordination in discussion with the leadership team.
Job plan and responsibilitiesThis is a 10 PA job plan including 2 SPA (1.5 core) and 8 DCCs, divided evenly between GIM and specialty. The GIM component will be delivered around ward work or in weeks 2–6; specialty activity will be carried out in weeks 2–6. Specialty DCCs are determined by the specialty CSL and will vary, not exceeding 4 DCCs unless agreed with the candidate.
Weekend frequency is 1:6 with no expectation for additional specialty-based weekend work. There is an option for remote working for GIM meetings and MDTs in weeks 2–6 to support flexible or less-than-full-time arrangements.
Indicated plans are for a procedure-based specialty; please discuss options with specialty CSLs prior to interview.
