Overview
Job title: Consultant in Acute Medicine - Specialty Lead (AMU, SDEC, and acute medicine team).

Hours:
10 sessions per week
- Lead the diagnosis and clinical management of patients presenting to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at Southmead Hospital.
- Provide regular ward rounds and clinical support to patients, alongside the junior medical team, ensuring high standards of patient care.
- Collaborate with colleagues across specialties to ensure a cohesive, multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
- Participate fully in the Acute Medicine rota, including early and late shifts, weekend cover (1 in 8 for 1 WTE), and SDEC shifts.
- Promote the work of the AMU and support Trust priorities around improving patient flow and reducing admissions.
- Be involved in teaching, audit, governance, and research within the AMU.
- Provide professional supervision and mentorship to junior medical staff, contributing to their development and the educational environment of the unit.

Person specificationQualifications and Registration
- MRCP or equivalent. Maintain full GMC registration.
- CCT in General Internal Medicine / Acute Internal Medicine and on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of appointment.
Desirable qualifications
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
- CCT in Acute Internal Medicine.
Training and Experience
- Experience of UK hospital systems and practices.
- 4 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post.
- Training in diagnosis and treatment of the full range of acute medical conditions.
Further Training, Management, Audit
- Evidence of recent CME and training progression.
- Experience in audit projects and reporting.
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues and the political context.
Desirable criteria
- Completion of a general management course or programme.
Research, Teaching, Publications
- Proven teaching ability; willingness to teach medical undergraduates and postgraduates.
- Desirable: proven track record in research and publications; ability to teach effectively; involvement in clinical directorate management.
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective teams.
- Positive attitude toward the wider healthcare team; good organisational and compassionate leadership skills.
- Experience in change management and positive leadership in healthcare.
- Empathetic and sensitive to the needs of patients and colleagues.
- Ability to explain complex information under stress; strong written and verbal communication skills for management reports.
- Must reside within 30 minutes or ten miles of the principal place of work.
- Must hold appropriate Home Office work/residence status to work in the UK.
