Responsibilities

  • Inpatient care: consultant leadership for ward rounds (including PTWR), ACCU/ward 8 cover during designated weeks, and inpatient referrals.
  • Subspecialty activity: sessions to be agreed per subspecialty interest with the Clinical Director.
  • Outpatients & access: general cardiology clinics;
    Advice & Guidance (A&G);
    Referral Assessment Service (RAS) triage; contribution to reducing waiting times and improving access.
  • On‑call: participation in the cardiology consultant on‑call rota in line with departmental arrangements; leadership of weekend ACCU and post‑take ward rounds as rostered.
  • Education & supervision: teaching undergraduates and postgraduates; support for Clinical/Educational supervision; contribution to departmental teaching rounds and journal clubs.
  • Governance & quality: participation in audit, QI, clinical governance, incident review, and mortality/M&M; maintaining high standards of documentation and consent.
  • Service development: contribute to ongoing service continuity and quality improvement during the service gap period.
Indicative Job Plan

Timetable depends on subspecialty interest, but may include:

  • Ward/ACCU weeks (≈6 per year):
    • AM: ACCU/ward rounds including PTWR (DCC)
    • PM:
      Ward reviews and board rounds (DCC)
    • Weekend: participation in ACCU/post‑take ward rounds per rota (on‑call supplement applies)
  • Off‑ward weeks (indicative):
    • 2 PA outpatient clinics (general/heart failure/arrhythmia/imaging)
    • 2‑3 PA subspecialty sessions (Cath lab, pacing list, imaging, or device clinic)
    • 0.5‑1 PA A&G/RAS triage and MDT meetings
    • 1.5 SPA teaching, supervision, CPD, audit, QI, governance
    • Remainder: admin and on‑call session‑in‑lieu
  • Final job plan to be agreed with the Clinical Director after appointment.
Qualifications
  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council, hold licence to practice, and membership of the Royal College of Physicians UK or equivalent.
  • Listed on the Specialist Register for Cardiology or eligible for registration within six months of appointment.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Full registration with GMC.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months), CESR, or European Community Rights.
  • Signed off for subspecialty interest.
Desirable Criteria
  • Higher research degree or in process of obtaining one; wide experience in elective and emergency cardiology in the UK up to CCT standard.
  • Evidence of practice at consultant or sub‑consultant, senior SpR level for a reasonable period.
  • Expertise in subspecialty field.
  • Previous fellowships or extended training.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Relevant NHS experience and undertaking audit, research, publications relevant to post.
  • Presentations at national and international meetings.
  • Appropriate UK professional registration.
