University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust offers a fixed‑term training contract for a Junior Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics. This post is appointed on a fixed‑term basis for 12 months with the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose is to deliver defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.

The Junior Fellow will provide junior medical support for consultant‑led ward rounds, on‑calls and orthopaedic surgery, and participate in the Junior on‑call / out‑of‑hours rota fully supported at both registrar and consultant level.

Duties include:

  • Basic patient care, daily ward rounds and ward cover.
  • Additional theatre and on‑call duties focusing training on orthopaedics.
  • Carry out routine admission, assessment and ongoing orthopaedic management of patients within consultant teams.
  • Assist senior/registrar on call in clerking new admissions and advising on emergency cases referred to the department.
  • Provide doctor supervision on wards within the T&O footprint and be the first point of contact for emergency and routine jobs.

  • Complete administrative tasks related to patient care and departmental management.
  • Engage in the clinical governance activity of the service.
  • Attend theatre days as first or second assistant on elective and trauma lists.
  • Engage in self development and clinical training days, including portfolio work, theatre, clinic or audits.
  • Comply with infection control practices.

Training plans will be jointly agreed with the Clinical Supervisor and Clinical Director to meet the training needs and interests of the Fellow and service needs. External study leave and internal teaching sessions are available.

Additional information

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust‑appointed fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring skilled worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria before applying.
