This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.
Main duties of the jobApplications are invited for a Senior Specialty Fellow in Oesophagogastric Surgery (12 months- starting in April 2027). This post is a Royal College of Surgeons of England approved fellowship in Oesophagogastric and Revisional Bariatric Surgery. The post is suitable for candidates who wish to consolidate training leading to them being able to manage the full spectrum of elective and emergency, benign and malignant upper GI (oesophagogastric) cases.
They will contribute to a 1:4 subspecialist (OG) consultant on call rota in a busy teaching hospital and major trauma centre. This post would suit candidates who hold CCT or are within 6 months of holding a CCT.
The successful candidate will join a team of 4 consultant surgeons delivering tertiary malignant and benign upper GI regional surgical services serving the people of Southampton and the Wessex region. While the subspecialist on-call service will be based in Southampton the appointee may be expected to provide services at Lymington New Forest Hospital and other regional hospitals as required in future.

DetailedJob Description And Main Responsibilities
The Fellow will have day-to-day leadership responsibilities for in-patient care and experience/training will be provided in laparoscopic and robotic surgery (including oesophagectomy), advanced endoscopy and the management of complex benign and emergency Upper GI conditions subject to current experience and development needs. The Fellow will be expected to help deliver audit and research projects within the unit and develop an annual expert surgical meeting.
