Xterra Health is a fast-moving, mission-driven organization empowering veterans through transparent access to the care, benefits, and support they’ve earned. Our Medical Evidence Consulting team is where that mission becomes personal: consultants sit down, by phone, with veterans who are trying to make sense of their records and their options.
Many veterans are unsure about which conditions they can claim, why an earlier claim was denied, or what evidence would strengthen a new one. As more veterans look to us for answers, we need experienced consultants who can turn complex medical records and VA claims rules into clear, usable guidance.
Before each consultation, our team of medical professionals reviews the veteran's records and builds a draft roadmap of potential conditions and evidence. The VA Medical Evidence Consultant uses that draft to conduct the call, but it is a starting point, not a script. You will complete your own review of the records, work through complex situations, and guide each veteran based on the evidence you find.
You will then finalize the roadmap, which is sent to the veteran as a written record of their options and next steps. You will conduct phone consultations and explain the VA disability claims process in plain language.
This is a role for someone who knows the VA disability claims process from the inside, reads a medical record with a critical eye, thinks independently when a case is more complicated than it first appears, and can explain a complicated process to a veteran with patience and respect.
SCOPE OFTHE ROLE Veteran Consultations
- Conduct phone consultations with veterans to explain the VA disability claims process and set clear expectations for next steps
- Listen to each veteran's history and goals to identify the questions and concerns that matter most to them
- Educate veterans on how claims are evaluated so they can make informed decisions about their own claims
- Conduct follow‑up consultations when a veteran requests one, limited to clarifying guidance provided in the original consultation
- Use the veteran’s draft roadmap as a starting point, then independently review veterans' records to confirm findings and identify evidence that supports, or is missing from, their claims
- Identify new conditions that may be claimable, including secondary and presumptive conditions, based on what the records show
- Analyze previously denied conditions to explain the likely reasons for denial and recommend evidence‑based paths forward
- Provide guidance on the types of medical and supporting evidence that strengthens a claim so veterans can pursue it with confidence
- Document every consultation, finding, and recommendation accurately and on time to maintain a complete record
- Finalize each veteran's roadmap based on your record review and consultation so it is accurate and clear before a final draft is sent to the veteran
- Apply current VA regulations, rating criteria, and case law to guidance so it stays accurate and consistent
- Ensure veteran records and personal information are handled in line with company privacy and security policies
- Flag trends in veteran questions, denials, and evidence gaps to help improve guidance and services
- Coordinate with fellow consultants and team leadership so veterans receive consistent, high‑quality guidance
- Contribute to playbooks, talking points, and process documentation for recurring consultation scenarios
- Stay current on changes to VA claims policy and procedure and share what you learn with the team to keep guidance accurate
