The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country are on a mission to create a Wilder Birmingham and Black Country. As an urban Wildlife Trust, they believe that education and community engagement are vital to protecting and restoring nature in our region. They work with people of all ages and backgrounds to build meaningful connections with the natural world and empower them to take action.

About the Role

They are looking for a dynamic and organised Education Officer who will play a vital role in inspiring children and families to connect with nature through engaging outdoor learning experiences. They will deliver a dynamic annual programme of curriculum-linked environmental education sessions and wild play activities across the region, with a particular focus on Birmingham. This role supports the development of lifelong connections to nature by bringing learning to life in local green spaces and nature reserves to support the planning and delivery of events and engagement activities across our sites and communities.

This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same.

This post is based at Eco Park, 258a Hobmoor Road, Small Heath, B10 9HH
, with flexibility to work from home as required. This role will require regular travel regionally – a company pool vehicle will be provided for travel in between sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Education Officer to plan and deliver school outreach programmes from initial contact to delivery within deadlines and criteria.
  • Actively manage communications with schools, supporting a bookings process to enable optimal use of time for booking educational sessions.
  • Plan and deliver high quality and inspiring education experiences for children, teachers and other audiences, ensuring everyone has a safe, informative and enjoyable learning experience that ensures their continued involvement, at sites throughout the Birmingham and Black Country region.
  • Ensure the continued development and improvement of lesson plans and learning resources for a range of curriculum linked education sessions across different Key Stages. Design seasonal sessions that link explicitly to year group programmes of study.
  • Deliver enrichment/promotional sessions to school staff as needed.
  • Gather feedback and evaluation from schools for monitoring purposes, taking photos and videos where permissions are granted for use in marketing materials. Some of this material will be shared with external funding bodies.
  • Help continually evaluate the effectiveness of the educational programme through qualitative and quantitative methods to reflect on and adapt our provision and gather evidence for funded work.
  • Ensure a high level of health and safety compliance including risk assessment of all activities and liaison with schools, landowners and site managers.
  • Help to manage education resources including purchasing decisions and effective storage, ensuring these are audited regularly and new resources are fit for purpose.
  • Support the Senior Education Officer and Education and Engagement Manager and other Trust employees to deliver the Trust’s Education and Engagement Strategy.
  • Manage the education inbox and respond to or pass on enquiries.
