Overview

Head Start/Early Head Start Home Visitor. The Home-Based Teacher is responsible for planning and implementing developmentally appropriate home visitation services, and meeting the social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs of young children and/or pregnant mothers in the Head Start Early Head Start Program. Program participants may include pregnant mothers, infants, toddlers, and/or preschoolers. Program services include weekly, 90-minute home visits provided in the home of enrolled families.

Comprehensive services are offered in partnership with Head Start/Early Head Start staff specializing in Health, Family Engagement, Disabilities, and Behavioral Health. Center-based group socialization sessions are conducted for two hours twice per month.

Responsibilities
  • Plan home-based and socialization activities to stimulate growth in literacy, language, mathematics, science, social and motor skills, such as responding to stories read aloud, following instructions, interacting with others, exploring materials, and using play equipment. Planning aligns with Head Start Performance Standards and the State of Michigan Early Childhood Standards of Quality.
  • Develop and use instructional materials aligned with the Parents as Teachers curriculum and the Partners for a Healthy Baby curriculum.
  • Maintain confidentiality of each child and family, and respect the culture and background of families served.
  • Use the program’s developmental screenings and child assessments as required.
  • Provide a welcoming and supportive relationship with parents to establish and reinforce acceptable child behavior, attitudes and social skills.
  • Assist with recruitment, enrollment, and required documentation for families and children in the home-based option.
  • Create a home-based lesson plan for each home visit that effectively engages parents and children in learning; promote the parent’s role as the child’s most important teacher.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction designed to meet the needs of children and parents to promote growth, development and school readiness for each child.
  • Document data collection for child assessment including observations, anecdotal notes, and demonstrations of skills to measure growth; complete required child assessments in a timely manner.
  • Communicate regularly with parents by phone, email, home visits, and parent conferences.
  • Assist families in obtaining necessary health assessments and follow-up care by providing referrals, information, transportation, and other supports as needed.
  • Promote parent/guardian participation in all aspects of the program including socializations, field trips, health events, screenings, family events, and Parent Policy opportunities.
  • Assess families’ needs and assist with resources and actions to help families meet their goals.
  • Utilize Child Plus to document child and family goals, communication logs, health information, participation, etc.
  • Participate in Family Engagement, building, staff and center team meetings.
  • Participate in required professional development hours.
  • Be trained and certified as required in the Parents as Teachers curriculum.
  • Follow safety protocol, including using safety devices, as outlined by the program.
  • Sanitize educational materials after each use.
  • Submit timesheets in a timely manner using company protocol.
  • Model Win-Win leadership consistently.
Qualifications
  • Education
    Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education preferred. Bachelor’s degree in related field with an Infant/toddler/preschool CDA and Home Visitor CDA accepted.
  • Experience
    Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in an early childhood setting. Home visiting experience preferred.
  • Skills/Other
    Must obtain a satisfactory criminal history check through fingerprinting and pass a physical before hire. Must have a valid Michigan driver license and current automobile insurance, with the ability to travel to and from homes in the assigned area. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as an effective team member. Accurate recordkeeping, financial management and data collection skills. Ability to use district technology and maintain proficiency as technology needs change.
