ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA VIRTUAL ACADEMIES AND THE ROVING SUBSTITUTE TEACHER POSITIONS:
The California Virtual Academies (a network of 9 public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based instruction to students in grades TK-12 in California. We use K12, inc. as our curriculum provider for the basis of instruction and teachers provide live instruction via the Engageli platform. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are still required to log into the online school daily, complete coursework, and attend instructional sessions.
Roving Substitutes are full time employees contracted per semester. They help in all departments, TK-12th grade as needed to cover teachers absent daily or on a short term basis. Roving Substitutes will also complete other duties as needed during contracted hours.
Hours: Full Time:
Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:00pm. You are not allowed to have another job during these contracted hours.

Compensation: $175 daily rate
We participate in CalSTRS. Full-time employees are offered health, dental, and vision benefits. Benefits information is provided upon offer. Training is provided for all programs, supported by a strong staff.
Position DetailsJob Title: Roving Sub
Reports To: Regional Lead/Program Specialist/Principal (designated area)/Director/Head of School
FLSA Status: Exempt
Department: Elementary/MS/HS/SPED - General Education
Responsibilities- Utilize substitute lesson plans and/or create appropriate lesson plans as needed for assigned content sessions.
- Proactively instruct, support, and monitor student academic progress, intervention and attendance daily/weekly; communicate with families when concerns arise.
- Collect, review, and evaluate student work.
- Respond within 24 hours to inquiries via phone and/or email during the regular work week.
- Follow all school policies and procedures.
- Document all communications with families according to school policies.
- Prepare and hold scheduled live instructional sessions, as assigned.
- Instruct individual students and/or small groups virtually.
- Complete all necessary compliance documents.
- Alert administrators to concerns about student progress and work with them to resolve issues.
- Generate notes regarding students to provide to the teacher upon return and to lead supervisor.
- Grade assignments in a timely manner and provide effective feedback.
- Use reports to identify and contact struggling students to provide guidance and support.
- Contribute to and complete student progress and report cards.
- Ensure students can access the curriculum and all needed platforms.
- Support parents with curriculum and academic program.
- Assist with basic computer setup, navigation, and troubleshooting for parents and students.
- Conduct necessary conferences with parents/learning coaches.
- Participate in virtual and required in-person staff meetings and professional development.
- Attend school-wide events, meetings, and outings, as needed.
- Assist with standardized testing as needed, including site logistics and proctoring.
- Collaborate with administration to prepare students and assist with testing logistics.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and contribute to work across departments as needed.
- Must hold a California 30-Day Substitute Teacher Permit OR a valid California Teaching Credential AND California English Learner Authorization.
- Competencies include:
Business Ethics, Communications, Use of Technology, and Computer Skills (Microsoft Office Suite; experience with student information systems; experience moderating web meetings).
Work Environment: Virtual position working from a home office. Travel within assigned areas to support students, attend meetings, proctor state exams, and participate in school activities as needed. Flexible schedule; reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities. Noise level typically moderate.
Physical Demands: Occasional lifting up to 15 pounds. Siting for extended periods; occasional standing, walking, and use of hands. Reasonable accommodations available.
Time Off and MiscellaneousRestrictions on Time Off: TBD based on the school calendar. Sick time may be approved under the California Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014.
