Book Nook is seeking passionate educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. Book Nook Tutors are on the front lines of closing the early‑learning gap for K‑8 students during a key period of their educational journey.
Our Online Reading Tutors work in live, synchronous online tutoring sessions using the Book Nook platform and video conferencing software. This is an exciting opportunity to have a direct, positive impact on students.
Book Nook tutors must reside in and work from the United States and have a US mailing address. We are unable to engage with tutors who reside in the following states:
California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, as well as US territories.
- Position type: 1099‑eligible independent contractor
- Pay rate: $20 per hour ($10 per 30‑minute session)
- Timeline:
Programming typically runs during the school year, with the busiest months from September to May - Schedule:
Up to 30 hours per week based on availability and the number of active tutoring programs; only weekdays (no weekends). Sessions can be before school, during school, or after school. - Program duration varies. Tutors are expected to commit to a full program with the same group of students throughout the series.

- Conduct virtual tutoring sessions covering vocabulary, phonics, and other science of reading elements using the Book Nook platform—no lesson planning required!
- Manage student behavior and engagement throughout sessions.
- Create a safe, respectful learning environment.
- Maintain positive relationships with students.
- Document observations for each session in the session notes.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must reside in and work from the United States, with a US mailing address, in one of the approved states:
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, or Washington, DC. - Knowledge of and experience with reading instruction based in the science of reading.
- Ability to build meaningful connections with students to create a motivating and encouraging environment.
- Creativity and flexibility to meet students where they are.
- Preferred:
Classroom experience and/or online teaching/tutoring experience in Reading/ELA—including current/previous teaching license, substitute teacher or teaching assistant, paraprofessional, professor or instructor, enrollment in a teacher credential or education degree program, and/or tutoring for another tutoring company. - Access to a computer (laptop or desktop), webcam, clean and distraction‑free environment, and reliable, high‑speed internet connection with a speed of at least 20 Mbps.
- Apply—submit an application online and typically receive a decision within 5 business days regarding the next steps in the process.
- Interview—applicants invited to our one‑way interview round will submit video responses answering questions designed to help us evaluate their experience and educational knowledge; this takes less than 30 minutes.
- Qualification Decision—after the interview round, the team will notify applicants within 5–10 business days of the decision to move forward with the onboarding process.
- Onboarding—includes setting up a payment account, completing a fingerprint‑based FBI background check, and reviewing online courses to familiarize with Book Nook's processes and systems.
