The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is in the College of the Environment, Foresty, and Natural Sciences (CEFNS). The Lumberjack Mathematics Center (LMC) focuses on student success in mathematics, particularly developmental and introductory math courses.
About the PositionThe Department of Mathematics & Statistics is currently seeking to fill a Student Development Coordinator, Intermediate position to coordinate and manage student tutors (Math Jacks) employed at the Lumberjack Mathematics Center (LMC). The role is responsible for developing and training peer math tutors to work in classrooms and in the LMC computer lab as they support students. The position works closely with departmental staff and reports to the LMC Director.
Experience in an educational setting is required; advanced mathematics knowledge is not required.
- 75% – Math Jack Recruitment, Training, Supervision, and Evaluation
- Responsible for recruiting and hiring Math Jacks each semester, as needed.
- Develop and monitor LMC course content training shells for Math Jacks.
- Collaborate with LMC Academic Program Coordinator, Intermediate to communicate pre‑semester content and HR training deadlines.
- Coordinate content knowledge support for Math Jacks and track content knowledge deadlines throughout the semester.
- Design beginning‑of‑term training for new Math Jacks.
- Design and facilitate weekly training sessions for new Math Jacks, focused on providing efficient and effective tutoring services in the LMC.
- Collaborate with LMC staff in the selection of Lead Math Jacks.
- Facilitate weekly Lead Math Jack meetings focused on leadership development, supporting new Math Jacks, and addressing student employee concerns.
- Organize staffing for undergraduate exam review sessions.
- Attend and co‑facilitate monthly all‑LMC staff meetings, providing updates to and addressing concerns of all undergraduate and graduate student staff.
- Observe and formally evaluate all Math Jacks regularly, meeting with each employee to review evaluation feedback.
- Ensure student employees retain minimum employment standards and develop and monitor improvement plans when needed.
- Responsible for knowledge of course structure and teaching philosophy of all LMC courses in support of Math Jacks and to ensure consistent information sharing between LMC staff and tutors.
- Serve as a resource to assist Math Jacks with a range of academic, work‑related, or other issues they encounter.
- Develop strategies to establish an inclusive and collaborative working environment for employees.
- Promote professional development opportunities for student employees.
- 20% – LMC Administrative Duties
- Serve as member of LMC Leadership Team.
- Work with LMC Director and Course Coordinators to determine tutoring needs.
- Monitor daily LMC activities; respond to requests, problems, and issues as needed.
- Attend weekly LMC Administrative Staff meetings.
- In conjunction with Department of Mathematics and Statistics Fiscal Manager, LMC Director, and the LMC Program Coordinator, oversee student employee budgeting and spending in the LMC.
- In collaboration with the LMC Director:
- Seek out opportunities to increase visibility and recognition of LMC Staff
- Work with the LMC Academic Success Coordinator – Intermediate on student success initiatives and collaborations between the LMC and other campus units/programs to strengthen university retention and persistence goals.
- Develop policies and initiatives to assist with the university goal of student success and national recognition.
