High School Counselor

Job Description

Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA), a Stride K12 partner, is seeking a full‑time School Counselor. The role is remote, primarily from Virginia, with occasional in‑person professional development and school events in surrounding states (Washington, DC, Maryland). The counselor will implement a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes academic, social, emotional, and career/college readiness for all learners.

• Provide preventive counseling services and respond to identified student needs through a data‑driven program.
• Plan and implement individualized college and career readiness plans, including coursework placement and Advanced Placement (AP) recommendations.
• Collaborate with teaching staff to develop a four‑year graduation plan, audit student schedules, and review transcripts to ensure candidacy for graduation.
• Deliver classroom instruction and support standardized testing, parent education, and staff development activities.
• Analyze student data to develop intervention action plans and provide short‑term counseling and referrals for long‑term support.
• Advocate for students during individual education plan meetings and other student‑focused meetings.
• Serve as a change agent to improve equity, access, and achievement opportunities for all students.
• Travel up to 20% of the time for face‑to‑face professional development, testing, and school events.

• Bachelor’s degree in Counseling or related field.
• School Counselor license.
• Three (3) years of experience in counseling and/or advisement.
• Master’s degree in school counseling (preferred).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, web‑based research, and database systems.
• Experience with distance learning and advanced counseling coursework (preferred).
• Flexibility to travel and adapt to a virtual work environment.
• Clearance on required background check.
• Knowledge of state and federal reporting requirements and career planning platforms (a plus).

This is a virtual role with a 40+ hour work week, typically 9‑5 (or 8‑4) or as defined by the school. The counselor will maintain a professional home office free from distractions during work hours.
