Job DescriptionThe role focuses on research and teaching in Language and AI Engineering. You will conduct fundamental and applied research, publish in leading conferences and journals, and develop a strong research profile. In addition, you will contribute to teaching and support the university’s goals in education and societal impact.
Your research is focused on the following core area:
- AI, Language, and Cognition
:
Conduct fundamental research into the relationship between language and cognitive capabilities, explore memory, reasoning, and the nature of machine “understanding,” and investigate the limits of current AI models.
In combination with one or more of the following areas:
- Multimodal Interaction
:
Develop AI systems that interact through vision, language, and physical interfaces (e.g., robotics). - Human‑AI Collaboration
:
Design and study models for effective human‑AI partnerships in complex collaborative tasks. - Enhancing AI Interpretability and Safety
:
Create techniques to understand internal workings of AI models, analyze biases, fairness, and other safety risks. - Societal Impact
:
Study the application of advanced AI in critical societal contexts, ensuring reliability and trustworthiness.
You are expected to build a strong research profile, engage in interdisciplinary collaborations, and contribute to research and education in this field.
Job Requirements- PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or a comparable technical field.
- Ability to conduct high‑quality academic research, with a record of peer‑reviewed publications.
- Strong expertise in machine learning, deep learning and modern AI architecture.
- Strong expertise in language and/or cognition.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas – AI interpretability and explainability (XAI), multimodal machine learning, human‑AI or human‑computer interaction, AI ethics, fairness and safety, or robotics and AI‑driven physical systems.
- Experience presenting at international scientific meetings.
- Motivation to teach and develop teaching skills.
- Strong cooperation skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
- Effective communication and leadership skills, including coaching and mentoring.
- Excellent written and verbal proficiency in English.
- Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities – scale 11 (min. €4728, max. €6433).
