Overview
United for Literacy is a national charity that provides local learning support programs to help students and families succeed in school. This role, based in Preston Township, Nova Scotia, is responsible for the delivery and development of inclusive literacy initiatives and the fostering of community partnerships.
Responsibilities- Identify learning and support gaps in the community for students and families with the greatest barriers.
- Collaborate with parents, schools, the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, and community organizations to understand needs and develop complementary programs.
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate student success and family literacy programs that address gaps in reading, writing, math, financial literacy, and digital literacy.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and support part‑time interns, summer staff, volunteers, and reader animators.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners to promote literacy and raise program awareness.
- Help design new programs when needed to respond to identified gaps and deliver training for volunteers, interns, staff, parents, and community partners.
- Measure program impact with key performance indicators, learner self‑assessments, and feedback from stakeholders.
- Collect and report program data, including learner participation, volunteer involvement, and books distributed.
- Manage program budget and resources.
- Knowledge of African Nova Scotian and Preston Township history and community context.
- Understanding of barriers to education and literacy and experience supporting learners facing systemic barriers.
- Experience using Africentric and culturally inclusive approaches in learning or community settings.
- Post‑secondary education, or an equivalent combination of education and community‑based experience.
- At least one year of experience in education, literacy, children and youth work, or related community programming.
- Experience in identifying learning needs and developing responsive programs.
- Experience building relationships with families, schools, and community organizations.
- Experience recruiting, training, and supporting staff or volunteers.
- Experience tracking participation and outcomes using surveys or self‑assessment tools.
- Strong communication skills and ability to facilitate learning or group activities.
- Self‑directed, dependable, adaptable, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team.
- Respectful, tactful, and compassionate approach to working with others.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office and other digital tools for communication, coordination, and reporting.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle access.
- Annual salary range: $45,330 to $51,563.
- Full‑time, 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; some evening or weekend hours may be required).
- 15 vacation days per calendar year, pro‑rated.
- Paid time off during seasonal closure between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
- Half‑days off before some long weekends.
