This 15-month term contract position invites applications from external candidates. Current Academic Teaching Staff receive first notification and consideration in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff Agreement. The role is hybrid, combining remote work with in‑person sessions at North Campus Edmonton and associated APL sites such as Edmonton General Hospital or Base Lab.
The position involves teaching and facilitating didactic and clinical components of the Bachelor of Science program in Medical Laboratory Science (BSc in MLS) within the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology. The successful candidate will be willing and able to deliver lectures and lab sessions to students in years 2, 3, or 4, across the five core disciplines, phlebotomy, hematology, and advanced courses aligned with evolving healthcare needs.
Responsibilities- Teaching: Instruct learners in classroom and laboratory settings, including fieldwork/clinical teaching, electives, guest lectures, seminars, experience‑based learning, simulation, and distance or web‑based delivery. Deliver assigned course content, adapt course design and instructional methods to maintain alignment with current practice and accreditation standards. Provide academic support to students and lead Teaching Assistants in developing laboratory skills.
- Evaluation: Design learner evaluation methods for assigned courses, monitor student performance, grade examinations and assignments, and review course content to maintain relevance.
- Program activities: Contribute to student orientation, supervise community‑engagement learners, collaborate with MLS faculty on curriculum development, and build relationships with clinical and faculty partners.
- Preparation: Maintain procedure manuals with Laboratory Coordinators, coordinate lecture and laboratory schedules, facilitate lectures and lab sessions, record student progress, and manage an active eClass and/or Canvas LMS site.
- Baccalaureate degree required.
- Recent clinical experience in hematology/hemostasis, chemistry, transfusion, microbiology, and/or histology.
- Recent experience in adult education.
- Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification, current and maintained annually.
- College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) registration, current and maintained annually.
- Completion of a Medical Laboratory Science or Technology program from an accredited institution.
- Familiarity with clinical laboratory practice.
- Outstanding critical‑thinking and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt style and collaborate with colleagues.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.
- Ability to work effectively within teams and committees, providing constructive feedback.
- Interest and/or experience in undergraduate education.
- Experience with undergraduate students is an asset; a Master’s or Ph.D. is an asset.
- Clinical experience in multiple laboratory science disciplines is an asset.
- Experience/expertise in flow cytometry is an asset but not required.
This position offers a comprehensive salary commensurate with experience in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
