Job Description & How to Apply Below

Location: Home-based initially, progressing into school-based supportHours: Up to 15 hours per week (hours initially reduced to allow for relationship building)Start Date: September 2026

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate tutor to support a Year 8 student with SEMH needs, very high anxiety and EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance).

This role will initially focus on building a trusting relationship and supporting the young person to recognise and manage emotions, before gradually introducing academic learning and supporting a carefully planned transition back into education.

The Role

The successful tutor will:

  • Build a strong, trusting and consistent relationship with the young person.
  • Support the young person to identify early signs of anxiety, distress and dysregulation.
  • Co-create personalised emotional regulation strategies and coping tools.
  • Adapt sessions daily in response to the young person's emotional presentation and level of regulation.
  • Deliver a flexible, child-centred programme that prioritises emotional wellbeing and engagement.
  • Gradually introduce English and Maths tuition at the young person's pace once trust and engagement have been established.
  • Promote confidence, resilience and positive attitudes towards learning.
  • Work collaboratively with the family, school and wider professionals to support agreed outcomes.
  • Support a carefully planned reintegration pathway into education.

Reintegration Pathway

The tutor will be expected to support a gradual transition towards school attendance, including:

  • Home-based learning and relationship building.
  • Sessions within a quiet classroom or safe learning space.
  • Gradual exposure to wider school environments.
  • Progression towards accessing a mainstream classroom where appropriate.

All transitions must be heavily supported emotionally, with the pace determined by the young person's needs, readiness and wellbeing.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Have a minimum of 6 months' experience working within an educational setting.
  • Have experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs and high levels of anxiety.
  • Be highly flexible and able to adapt plans and activities in response to the young person's emotional needs each day.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting young people with EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance).
  • Experience delivering English and Maths interventions.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a tutor who understands that emotional wellbeing must come before academic progress and who can provide the consistent support needed to help a young person rebuild confidence in learning and successfully re-engage with education.

Please do get in touch if you are interested in the opportunity, and I will give you a call to discuss further details.

Thankyou.
