Position: Learning Design Consultant, Online Course Development (One-Year Contract)

Are you passionate about designing engaging, high-quality online learning experiences? Are you also curious about how AI can responsibly support and improve the way online courses are developed?

We're looking for a Learning Design Consultant, Online Course Development to join our team for a one-year term and help design and develop new online courses across UFred's certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and graduate programs.

Working closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) and internal academic partners, you'll help take courses from their initial academic framework and assessment design through to developed, SME-approved content that is ready for digital production and implementation.

This role is a great fit for someone who brings strong learning design fundamentals, enjoys collaborating with faculty and SMEs, and is excited to work within a modern, streamlined course development environment-including the responsible use of AI-supported development tools.

Responsibilities Course framework and curriculum design
  • Collaborate in structured course design conversations with SMEs to define the course description, syllabus, course learning outcomes, CLO-to-PLO mapping, weekly topics and subtopics, assessment plan, and assessment-to-CLO mapping.
  • Support the translation of program expectations, academic standards, and level requirements into coherent course frameworks and learning pathways.
  • Review sequencing, scope, workload, learning progression, and academic integrity considerations, and recommend practical adjustments for assigned courses.
  • Use approved course development templates, checklists, and design standards when preparing course frameworks for review and approval.
Responsible AI-supported development and academic quality support
  • Use approved AI tools, structured workflows, and prompt patterns to support the drafting and refinement of learning content, examples, activities, case studies, feedback, knowledge checks, and assessment items.
  • Work closely with SMEs to verify content accuracy, currency, breadth, depth, and appropriateness for the intended academic level.
  • Edit, organize, and refine draft content into learning materials that are clear, instructionally effective, learner centered, and aligned to course outcomes.
  • Apply institutional expectations for responsible AI use, copyright, privacy, bias mitigation, and academic quality control.
  • Maintain clear documentation, SME decisions, review notes, approvals, and content changes throughout course development.
Online course development and production support
  • Develop and prepare SME approved content using structured course development workflows, institutional templates, standards, and supported development tools.
  • Apply evidence informed online learning practices, accessibility requirements, and Universal Design for Learning principles in the development and presentation of content, activities, interactions, and assessments.
  • Identify and coordinate requirements for multimedia elements, interactions, knowledge checks, and other course assets to support engagement and academic rigour.
  • Prepare organized, approved course content and supporting assets for downstream digital production, LMS implementation, testing, and launch readiness.
  • As assigned, support course configuration or development using approved digital authoring tools and templates based on project and operational needs.
Quality review, documentation, and workflow improvement
  • Conduct course level design, alignment, accessibility, and readiness checks using defined rubrics, mapping checks, and institutional quality criteria.
  • Incorporate feedback from SMEs and internal stakeholders throughout development to strengthen course quality, alignment, usability, and readiness.
  • Maintain accurate records of…
