Hydrology/Water Quality Consultant

McMillen, Inc. is seeking a motivated, self‑directed Hydrology/Water Quality Consultant (1‑5 years of experience) to join our Environmental Services Group to support hydro projects across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. This role involves project work from study design through field implementation, data analysis, and reporting. We’re looking for someone adaptable, collaborative, and eager to grow with our team of biologists, scientists, and regulatory specialists, while building strong, lasting client relationships.

This is a full‑time (40 hours/week) position and when not in the field, the hired individual would be expected to be in the office assisting with other natural resource and permitting tasks. Depending on the location of the individual, that person may be in a McMillen office, home office or hybrid.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and participate in field studies related to water quality and hydrology, including:
  • Water quality instrumentation installation and maintenance
  • Streamflow measurements and bathymetric/topographic surveying
  • Aquatic habitat mapping and fluvial geomorphology
  • Develop and manage study plans, technical reports, and licensing documents (PADs, study plans, reports, and license applications) that meet state, federal, and FERC requirements.
  • Analyze and synthesize scientific data (including large datasets) into clear, well‑organized reports and presentations for diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues and clients; communicate clearly in both in‑person and remote settings.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines with strong problem‑solving, decision‑making, and organizational skills.
  • Build productive partnerships through integrity, accountability, and effective communication.
  • Adapt to challenges and changing priorities while consistently delivering results.
  • Travel regularly and spend extended time in the field, often in remote and physically demanding conditions. Up to 50% of the time for this role will be travel/field work and 50% in the office.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Earth Sciences (Geology or Hydrology), Natural Resources, or Civil Engineering
  • 1‑5 years in water quality, fluvial geomorphology, or hydrologic field studies (consulting experience preferred).
  • Aquatic/hydrologic studies connected to hydroelectric facilities (knowledge of hydropower principles and the FERC relicensing process is a plus).
  • Proficiency with MS Office; experience with ArcGIS (Pro, Online, Field Maps, Survey
    123) preferred.
  • Experience with hydrologic and water quality instruments (YSI, HOBO) preferred; basic troubleshooting and maintenance skills including use of hand/power tools in the field.
  • Familiarity with hydrologic survey methods (bathymetry, streamflow measurements, use of an ADCP) and topographic surveys (total station, differential leveling) is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of programming languages (R, Python) for data analysis is a plus.
  • Ability to work long days in remote locations, wade in swift water, and use hand/power tools is required.
  • Strong technical writing, editing, and report development capabilities are required.
Compensation Package
  • Pay Range: $70,000–$80,000 (DOE)
  • Benefits: McMillen provides a full Benefits Program consisting of Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, FSA, EAP, 401(k) and match, 9 Paid Holidays, generous PTO, opportunity for Stock Ownership and Wellness Reimbursement.
