Structural Engineer - Airplane Hangars (Found Materials) Summary

We are seeking a talented and driven Structural Engineer to join our team. As a Structural Engineer, you will play a crucial role in designing, analyzing, and ensuring the structural integrity and safety of civil airplane hangar structures made from reclaimed or repurposed materials. Collaborating with architects, construction teams, and other engineers, you will develop sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally‑conscious solutions for building airplane hangars using reclaimed materials.

This position also involves utilizing your expertise in calculating structural moments for steel members with unusual shapes and sizes and welds, as well as contributing to the development of software for automating structural moments of found materials in collaboration with our computer engineering and data science team.

Responsibilities
  • Develop innovative design solutions for airplane hangars using found materials, considering structural integrity, stability, and safety, including the calculation of structural moments for steel members with unusual shapes and sizes.
  • Conduct thorough structural analysis and calculations to ensure compliance with building codes, industry standards, and project specifications.
  • Collaborate with architects, construction teams, and stakeholders to integrate found materials into the design and construction process while maintaining structural stability and performance.
  • Prepare detailed construction documents, including plans, specifications, and reports for construction teams.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to ensure compliance with design plans and provide technical support during the construction phase.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, advancements in sustainable construction materials, and applicable building codes and regulations.
  • Participate in meetings with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to address project requirements, resolve technical issues, and provide professional recommendations.
  • Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary teams to ensure coordinated and integrated design solutions.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to junior engineers and team members.
  • Foster a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility throughout projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master's degree preferred) from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Structural Engineering, or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in structural engineering or equivalent graduate experience.
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, and building codes, including materials commonly used in reclaimed or repurposed construction.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software (e.g., SAP
    2000, ETABS).
  • Demonstrated ability to create sustainable and innovative design solutions while maintaining structural stability and safety, including expertise in calculating structural moments for steel members with unusual shapes and sizes.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and sustainability practices related to construction materials and methods.
  • Commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and sustainable design practices.
  • Experience in conducting site visits, inspections, and construction support activities.
  • Knowledge of aviation industry standards and regulations related to airplane hangar design is a plus.

Join our team of forward‑thinking scientists and engineers and make a positive impact on the aviation industry and society by designing environmentally‑conscious structures using found materials. Apply your skills to create sustainable solutions that meet the needs of our clients while utilizing your expertise in calculating structural moments for steel members with unusual shapes and sizes. You will have the opportunity to drive research into methods for creating a sustainable construction marketplace and deploy your solutions in the field.

We offer competitive compensation and the opportunity for remote work. While we value the benefits of remote work, we prefer candidates who are local and available for in‑person collaboration as needed. Initially, this position can start as part‑time or on a contracting basis, but we are prepared to hire a full‑time employee immediately.
