Join Sargent & Lundy as a Lead Underground Transmission Line Engineer 2 - Grid. This position offers the opportunity to apply and expand your knowledge of underground transmission line engineering, including routing, duct bank configurations, manhole placement, and electrical principles.
Location:
Newark, DE
- Design complex underground transmission lines for voltages up to 500 kV.
- Perform cost analyses, develop design criteria, and determine siting and routing in complex environments.
- Plan manhole placement and develop physical design, including duct bank layouts, trenchless designs, cable pulling calculations, and drawing packages.
- Conduct cable selection studies, determine bonding schemes, and perform ampacity calculations.
- Develop riser structure configurations and structural loading.
- Create specifications for cable procurement, duct bank installation, trenchless installation, and general construction.
- Coordinate with vendors and clients to specify transmission line components.
- Lead and direct a project team of engineers, designers, and drafters.
This role offers a hybrid work arrangement. You will spend three days a week in the office, with two days of remote work.
Dependent upon your location, this opportunity offers a generous relocation package.

Essential Skills And Experience- BS degree from an ABET‑accredited engineering program.
- Current PE license.
- Proficiency with CYMCAP modeling.
- Proficiency with cable tensioning calculations and software.
- 12+ years of experience leading design teams on complex underground transmission projects.
- Experience incorporating code requirements, EPRI recommendations, and client requirements.
- Experience with cost estimate development, schedule creation, and coordination.
- Experience with XLPE cable design.
- Experience preparing specifications for installation and procurement of underground transmission line materials and components.
- Knowledge of right‑of‑way requirements, bonding schemes, underground transmission line plans, and construction documents.
- Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NESC, EPRI Green Book, IEC, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
- Proficiency with MS Office applications.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Experience with high‑pressure gas‑filled or high‑pressure fluid‑filled pipe‑type cable systems and associated equipment.
- Experience with underground distribution or low‑voltage cable systems.
