The Communications Engineer is responsible for supporting and maintaining enterprise systems in the Radio/Wireless enterprise environment. The position will require independent decisions and actions as daily projects require a level of technical expertise and forward movement.
This engineering position is responsible for, installing, and maintaining complex radio communication, video and data network systems. Must be capable of installing and removing electronic equipment from a variety of locations, including jails, hospitals, courthouses, and emergency vehicles including police cars and fire apparatus.
The Communications Engineer II reports to the Enterprise Operations Infrastructure Manager. The primary job duties of this position include:
- Under direction, performs complex work involved in the analysis, implementation and maintenance of the Town of Gilbert’s 800 MHz radio system; performs related duties as required.
- Programs and re programs all mobile and portable radios, consoles and controllers used in the system and updates all databases as appropriate.
- Fault isolates and analyzes complex system failures and performance degradation and effects or advises on system recovery/restoration/repair, either remotely or in the field.
- Initiates, reviews and analyzes complex system performance and reliability measurements and reports, and develops and implements cost effective recommendations to improve service delivery and system reliability and efficiency through hardware and software changes.
- Studies system failures and alarm patterns and determines methods for averting patterned outages.
- Assists appropriate Town of Gilbert groups relative to trunked radio System repair, and maintenance.
- Backs up all appropriate software and databases to ensure recoverability of systems.
- Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.
- Other Duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management, Information Systems, or closely related field. However, a non-technical degree can be acceptable if complemented with the appropriate certifications and/or experience.
- 5‑7 years of Information Technology industry experience.
- 5‑7 years of Trunked radio system troubleshooting and design.
- Must be able to pass PD background.
- Must participate in on‑call rotation.
CERTIFICATIONS:
- FCC Radio Operators License. (Must obtain within 1st year of employment).
- Valid AZ Driver’s License.
- Comp Tia Network+ Certification preferred.
- Cisco CCNA - Preferred.
- Information Technology security best practices and procedures for troubleshooting trunked radio systems.
- Various interface cabling that is required in the use of trunked radio systems and wireless microwave systems.
- Knowledge and Implementation of Fire Station alerting systems.
- General Knowledge of data networks.
- Enterprise trunked radio systems.
- SD‑WAN and SASE Technologies.
- Hand Held Radio configuration.
- Basic electrical troubleshooting. AC/DC.
- Structured Network Cabling.
This position is an At‑Will position and is FLSA Exempt – ineligible for overtime compensation.
This department is working in a hybrid environment, with remote work. Modified work privileges are approved at the sole discretion of the department director; as such, the department reserves the right to modify or discontinue modified work arrangements at any point. Regardless of work location (Remote, On‑Site, or Hybrid) Town of Gilbert employees are required to reside in the state of Arizona by hire date.
