Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Reactor Core and Component System Design Engineer for a long-term contract opportunity with a remote or onsite work model, based in Bellevue, WA. In this role, you will report directly to the Reactor Core System Lead and play a pivotal role in the integration of core design methodologies and core component designs. You will work collaboratively with a diverse team of engineers and scientists to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient solutions in the nuclear energy space.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with a geographically diverse design team to develop and document supporting designs while maintaining high standards of safety and reliability.
  • Support the Reactor Core System Lead in the design and integration of complex systems, equipment, and components—working from requirements definition through to final design.
  • Evaluate and establish the design basis for safety classifications, system requirements, and failure mode assessments to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Apply engineering principles, methods, and tools in the design of nuclear and industrial facilities and their associated systems.
  • Coordinate analyses such as neutronics, thermal, fuel performance, and core mechanical analyses conducted by other team members.
  • Identify and apply relevant design codes and standards (e.g., ASME, ANS) and ensure regulatory compliance for mechanical system designs.
  • Assess technology readiness and develop maturation plans for critical elements of the Reactor Core Component (RCC) systems.
  • Engage in continuous learning to adopt nuclear industry best practices and identify opportunities for design improvements.
  • Contribute to licensing activities related to Safety Analysis Reports and participate in design reviews during key project milestones.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Education:
    • B.S. in Mechanical, Nuclear, System Engineering, or a related field with 10-20 years of experience;
    • M.S. with 3-15 years of experience;
    • Ph.D. with 2-10 years of experience.
  • Proven ability in developing designs for complex structures and integrating multi-discipline components, particularly for mechanical pressure vessel equipment.
  • Deep understanding of configuration management principles and experience using design control tools in nuclear or similar complex industrial applications.
  • Previous experience with nuclear reactors, high-temperature pressure vessels, or similar system design preferred.
  • Exceptional skills in technical writing, communication, and presentations.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to technical excellence.
  • Self-starter with the ability to coordinate and work effectively within a design team with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities in managing competing objectives and design constraints.
  • Familiarity with quality standards in design activities, such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001.
  • A high degree of trust, integrity, and commitment to fostering teamwork and open communication.
Work Environment
  • Primarily desk-based work with the potential for occasional travel (estimated at 0-5%).
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, engage in fine motor operations, and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Work in a setting that requires visual and auditory focus and adherence to safety standards.
