Job Summary
Apply now for the position of Mechatronics Engineer in our global R&D organization. We are looking for a Mechatronics Engineer with a strong technical background in control systems, robotics, and mechatronics with a penchant for innovation. You will report to the Director of Mechatronics & Structures in the mechanical engineering team. The role involves driving execution of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Model-Based Design (MBD) through development of systems-integrated mechatronics models, and supporting the advancement of mechatronics and robotics for future Laboratory Diagnostic instruments and Automation platforms.
You will also champion development of new sensing, detection, and actuator technologies for our next-generation instruments.
- Develop models, simulation tools and design-optimization methodologies for a wide range of precision motion, fluidic and thermal control applications.
- Expand existing Model-Based Design (MBD) capabilities and develop and execute Model-Based Engineering (MBSE) workflows through systems-level integration of mechatronics sub-systems models.
- Develop novel sensing, estimation, actuation and control solutions for next‑generation analyzers and automation systems.
- Create workflows to integrate robotic systems into Instrument and Automation architectures.
- Guide design engineers through the mechatronics design cycle: requirement understanding, concept generation, design selection, simulation-based servo‑mechanical design optimization, and robustness assessment.
- Generate and test model-based code for hardware‑in‑loop testing of prototypes for novel mechatronic and robotic designs.
- Collaborate with mechatronics specialists and engineers from Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, and Firmware/Software functions to deliver improved, cost‑effective Mechatronics solutions for Instrument and Automation platforms.
- Contribute to technology development for next‑generation diagnostics platforms.
- Lead technology and design reviews with cross‑functional teams.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts by developing advanced modeling and simulation techniques and authoring design best practices.
- Identify potential technical problems and provide effective, innovative solutions.
- Travel to Tarrytown, NY;
Flanders, NJ; and Glasgow, DE as needed to support cross‑site product and technology development work. - Work in a hybrid environment, with onsite and remote work based on business needs.
- Solid understanding of dynamics, control theory, sensors, actuators, circuit theory, applied physics, electronics, and signal processing.
- Strong background in mechatronics and robotics.
- Experience developing mathematical models and simulation tools for mechatronic systems, from detailed physics‑based models to integrated system‑behavior models.
- Proficiency in advanced control algorithms and designs achieving optimal performance and robustness in robotic and motion control systems.
- System‑thinking approach to problem solving, including firmware/software architecture interactions.
- Knowledge of system identification and parameter estimation methods.
- Proficient in MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, Stateflow, and MATLAB‑based code generation and deployment.
- Experience with NX CAD software and Simcenter Motion (Multibody Dynamics) is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with multiphysics modeling (Simscape) and other tools.
- Programming experience with C, C++, and Python.
- Knowledge of novel sensors and actuators with applications to robotics, MEMS, and signal detection.
- Experience applying AI/ML algorithms for control, sensing, fault detection, and machine vision systems.
- Experience with instrumentation, data acquisition, uncertainty analysis, statistical methods, DOE, and data analysis.
- Structured design optimization methods, including Bayesian optimization schemes, would be a plus.
- Team player with experience working in multi‑disciplinary teams.
- Proven record of innovative thinking to develop novel solutions spanning multiple disciplines.
- Professional peer‑reviewed publications and patents are highly desirable.
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Biomedical, Mechatronics Engineering or Engineering Physics.
- Relevant prior work experience of 2‑15 years is preferred, but candidates of all experience levels may be considered.
- Prior experience in product development for medical, aerospace, automotive, factory automation, robotics, and Precision Instruments industry is preferred.
- Permanent work authorization in the U.S. is required.
