Senior Controls Engineer

Contract-To-Hire

Sigma Design has partnered with a leading control systems integration firm in Bend, OR, to hire an experienced Instrumentation and Controls professional to join their facility in Bend, OR. This company delivers comprehensive, innovative automation solutions through a highly skilled team of professionals, serving clients with distinct, tailored systems that set industry standards. This position is contract to hire role based in Bend, OR.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement process automation control systems.
  • Program PLCs (Allen-Bradley preferred, experience with Siemens and Emerson is a plus).
  • Develop and configure SCADA/HMI applications (Inductive Automation, Rockwell Software, AVEVA).
  • Specify, configure, and commission instrumentation and motor control circuits.
  • Lead or support system commissioning and field start-ups.
  • Configure and maintain industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Deploy and troubleshoot networking equipment: switches, routers, firewalls, cellular modems.
  • Implement and manage server/virtual environments.
  • Ensure OT/IT network security and convergence with enterprise systems.
  • Prepare submittals, system documentation, and detailed design specifications.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for control loops, instrumentation, and SCADA systems.
  • Interface directly with customers, providing training, support, and project updates.
Education and Experience:

(Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)
  • Engineering degree (BS/MS in Electrical, Controls, Computer, or related) or equivalent technical training with hands-on experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in systems integration, controls engineering, or OT/IT roles.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (Primarily Allen-Bradley RSLogix/Studio 5000).
  • Proficiency in HMI/SCADA development (Primarily Ignition, AVEVA, Factory Talk View).
  • Solid understanding of industrial networking protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting network infrastructure (switches, routers, firewalls, VLANs, VPNs).
  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for digital/analog circuits, instrumentation, and motor controls.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for customer-facing roles.
Other Considerations
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure (OR or CA).
  • Recognized networking certification.
  • Familiarity with UL508A/698A standards and electrical panel design.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (2D electrical).
  • Experience with industrial cybersecurity best practices.
  • Multi-industry project exposure (water/wastewater, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, utilities).
  • Experience managing project scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Familiarity with RFIs, submittals, and change order processes.
Other
  • Travel for commissioning is expected, approximately 25% annually depending on project needs.
  • Remote work may be considered at hire, with the expectation of relocation to Bend, OR within three months (relocation support available).
  • Able to work independently while collaborating with a multi-disciplined team.
  • Comfortable working in both office settings and field environments.

Work Environment:

Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients, or suppliers.
