Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting two Professional Engineers in Bridge Design. This is a professional structural design engineer position responsible for final design work, design review, and final bridge plan checking on a project level with minimal guidance from the Bridge Area Engineer. The engineer may also perform preliminary design work, which may be done in conjunction with the Bridge Area Engineer or assigned by expected results.
State law requires that bridge design work be done under the responsible charge of a licensed professional engineer. The engineer in this position must have the judgment, skills, and abilities to be in responsible charge of engineering work and be fully competent in conventional bridge design with a working knowledge of seismic analysis and design and preliminary design requirements.
- Perform final design work, review design work, and conduct final bridge plan checking on projects, with minimal guidance from the Bridge Area Engineer.
- Perform preliminary design work as assigned, potentially in collaboration with the Bridge Area Engineer or as directed by expected results.
- Ensure all design work complies with applicable engineering standards, including knowledge of seismic analysis and design and preliminary design requirements.
Education and Experience
- Typically obtained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program that includes civil structural engineering courses in structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design.
- Licensure:
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Montana. Individuals with a valid PE in another state who is eligible to obtain Montana PE registration through Comity within 6 months of hire will also be considered. - Alternative qualifications include:
Graduate degrees with concentrations in structural analysis and design will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
- Thorough knowledge of civil engineering theory, methods, and practices related to bridge structural design; familiar with AASHTO Design Specifications, bridge design standards and policies, industry guidelines, and bridge/road construction methods.
- Ability to perform engineering analyses, apply concepts to diverse situations, evaluate structural calculations and contract documents for clarity and constructability, and identify design conflicts.
- Judgment in interpreting design guidelines and standards; ability to prepare calculations, reports, and other design documentation; proficiency with office engineering tools including computers and calculators; strong written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with designers, engineers, non-technical personnel, and the public.
