AboutThe Role
Balfour Beatty is looking for a Principal Temporary Works Designer to join its Power T&D team in Scotland.
Role PurposeTo work with the project team, designers and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver the safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives.
Take responsibility for the design delivery and design suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects with a particular focus on Temporary Works delivery.
Provide advice on constructability and sequencing of civil design and temporary works designs for Power T&D business around cabling, overhead lines and substations.
Engage in bid development, tendering and innovation projects alongside the Team Lead & Design Delivery Manager.
Key Accountabilities- Undertake the design and co‑ordination of civil and temporary works designs required on projects, from initial feasibility to detailed design, installation, and final removal, including where appropriate in‑house temporary works design.
- Ensure timely delivery and quality of designs, including preparation of reports, calculations, and drawings to a high technical level compliant with the required Client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
- Drive a Safety by Design approach at all times.
- Produce in‑house temporary works designs and check 3rd‑party designs.
- Check design calculations performed by other engineering colleagues.
- Identify competent designers and contractors for installation of each type of temporary works, and coordinate and supervise their work.
- Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the design output.
- Undertake technical assurance reviews and provide design approval as required.
- Work closely with other design team elements to ensure effective collaboration on multidisciplinary projects.
- Assist in the management of the tender process, understand and interpret scope of works, provide advice and opinion.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior team members.
- Develop and implement policies, processes and procedures to support continual improvement of the team.
- Support the advancement of engineering design delivery for the team with particular focus on upskilling and use of software.
- Assist in determining team objectives, strategy and requirements.
- Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in civil engineering and/or geotechnical engineering.
- Chartered Engineer preferred with either ICE or IStruct
E. - Extensive working knowledge and understanding of BS5975.
- Experience supervising sub‑consultants or subcontractors.
- Proven experience in the design of civil engineering works.
- Strong, proven experience of the management of design of civil or temporary works.
- Experience in the design and checking of temporary works for civil engineering projects.
- IT Literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAD).
- Smart working with up to 40% remote working where roles allow.
