Senior Mechanical Engineer - Nuclear
Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our nuclear services team and contribute to the design, analysis, and construction of nuclear facilities. This is an opportunity to play a critical role in the engineering and design processes for commercial nuclear power generation. Mesa’s strategic growth strategy for our commercial nuclear division is to create a ready service pool of available staff to support proposals and projects in nuclear generation.
The position is open to a candidate who is able to work either in our Chattanooga, TN office location on a hybrid schedule working a minimum of 3 days in the office, typically Tuesday through Thursday, with the ability to work from home the remaining workdays, or a remote candidate located near the Chicago, IL area.
Candidates must be able to travel to plant sites and support outages when needed (approx. 6‑8 days/month with ability to support longer durations during outages).

Education,Experience, Licensure
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university (required)
- Master of Science or other advanced degree in engineering (preferred)
- PE registration (highly preferred) – or ability to obtain PE License within one year of employment (required)
- Minimum of 6 years’ experience in design and 4 years’ experience in design of modifications in nuclear commercial plants
- Experience performing pipe stress analysis using AutoPIPE or a similar software (highly preferred)
- Experience working with multiple operating nuclear clients, specifically Constellation Nuclear, and vendors (highly preferred)
- On‑site and past unescorted access (highly preferred) or ability to obtain unescorted access at an operating or construction nuclear plant (required)
- Experience with Industry Standard Design Procedure IP‑ENG‑001 (required)
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, NFPA)
- Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite). Additional software skills including Bluebeam, Micro Station, AutoCAD, Vault, Plant3D, Inventor, ReCap, Solid Works, FARO Scene, and other 3D rendering programs (preferred)
- Support proposal development and guide other engineers in the development of deliverables for nuclear projects within the Mechanical discipline
- Report to an assigned Project Engineer and Project Manager on multi‑discipline proposals and projects and act as a Project Engineer for Mechanical projects when required
- Act as a technical point of contact for the customer, and provide area expertise in development of industry standard design and calculations associated with design and construction of commercial nuclear modifications
- Be responsible for working with other engineers and designers to prepare design change packages for modifications at operating nuclear plants and other associated nuclear facilities
- Be proficient in preparation of engineering change packages (EC’s)
- Prepare scoping documents and proposals to determine extent of modifications required, preparing cost estimates for engineering/design activities for Mechanical
- Conduct field walkdowns to determine existing configuration of plant structures, systems, and components
- Perform a broad range of Mechanical design activities to support development of design change documentation
- Have design engineering experience associated with commercial nuclear sites
- Possess the ability to interpret codes and regulations, and standard practices
- Be able to demonstrate adaptability; proficient in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving issues within a nuclear power plant environment
- Have effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
- Possess excellent communication skills and ability to interface with customers and internal team members under a matrixed organization
