Senior Substation Physical Engineer – Remote (US)

ICF is seeking a Senior Substation Physical Engineer to lead the design and execution of high‑voltage substation projects (typically 69 kV to 500 kV) with the goal of delivering excellent quality work for our clients.

The Ideal Candidate

You are a highly motivated engineer who takes pride in your services, ensures projects are done right and deadlines met, and can work independently from home without direct supervision.

Key skills include deep knowledge of physical layout, bus design, equipment selection, grounding, and constructability. You should have extensive experience with utility clients, be self‑motivated, and capable of mentoring junior staff.

The position offers a clear growth path to Supervising Engineer, with increasing responsibility for project oversight, client engagement, and team leadership.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Lead and oversee design and preparation of substation physical design drawings including: one‑line and three‑line diagrams, station general arrangements & sections, electrical details, grounding plans & details, conduit and cable tray layouts, control cubicle layouts, low‑voltage AC panels, and lightning protection.
  • Develop engineering studies such as AC load, illumination, grounding, and lightning shielding.
  • Create bill of materials based on design criteria.
  • Coordinate with protection, controls, civil/structural, and drafting disciplines to ensure quality deliverables.
  • Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, and project planning.
  • Attend site visits and constructability reviews.
  • Interpret vendor information and incorporate into design deliverables.
  • Apply client standards and ensure compliance with IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility standards.
  • Perform and ensure QA/QC processes are followed on all design packages.
  • Continuously improve engineering, technical, and professional knowledge and performance.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (power systems preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in substation physical design for electric utilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Micro Station, or similar design tools.
  • Familiarity with substation design standards and practices (IEEE, NESC, utility specs).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and mentor junior staff.
  • Experience leading 3‑D substation projects using Autodesk Inventor.
  • Knowledge of substation grounding studies and CDEGS.
  • Experience with Agi
    32 illumination software.
  • Advanced Microsoft Word and Excel skills.
Pay Range

$89,203.00 – $ (Nationwide Remote Office, US)
