Assistant Civil Engineer; CIP Wastewater

With supervisor approval, incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however, they must physically reside within the Sacramento region or have the ability to regularly report to a City of Sacramento physical worksite with little notice.

The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities’ (DOU) Wastewater (WW) Planning Section is seeking motivated engineers to join the team that plays a vital role in shaping the future of the City’s separated and combined sewer systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful, hands‑on work that goes beyond contract management. The WW Planning Section is directly involved in technical tasks such as hydraulic modeling, master planning, condition assessments of pump stations and force mains, asset risk analysis, capital improvement project (CIP) development and prioritization, data analysis for wastewater rate planning and development impact fee updates, and Operations and Maintenance coordination.

Additionally, this position is responsible for CIP project delivery tasks which could include preparing design plans, specifications, budgets, and providing construction management oversight.

The ideal candidate will have experience or education in wastewater, hydraulics, and/or asset management. Familiarity with software tools such as GIS, Info Works ICM, Excel, and Info Asset Planner are highly desirable.

To perform professional civil engineering work in the planning, design, technical investigation, and construction of projects in the areas of public works, transportation, hydraulics, and structural engineering.

Assistant Civil Engineer This is the journey level class in the professional civil engineering series not requiring registration. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Junior Engineer. Incumbents of this class perform the moderately difficult professional engineering work in civil engineering. Assistant Civil Engineers are normally considered to be of a continuing training status and as assigned responsibilities and breadth of knowledge increase with experience, and registration is received, may reasonably expect their positions to be reassigned to the next higher class of Associate Civil Engineer.

Associate Civil Engineer This is the full journey level class in the civil engineering series requiring registration. Positions in the class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Assistant Civil Engineer, or, when filled from the outside, require prior advanced professional civil engineering work experience. An Associate Civil Engineer works under general supervision and is expected to complete complex civil engineering assignments requiring the use of judgment and initiative in developing solutions to problems, interpreting general policies, and determining work assignments.

Work in this class is distinguished from that of the Assistant Civil Engineer class by the greater complexity of the assignments received and by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate.

Direction is provided by a higher level professional engineer or a division head level position. Responsibilities of an Associate Civil Engineer may include the direct or indirect supervision of lower level professional engineers and technical personnel. Responsibilities of an Assistant Civil Engineer may include the technical or functional supervision of technical personnel.
