Develop and maintain the CAMP service component by acquiring new and existing clients. Conduct research and development activities that include performing experiments, simulations, and theoretical calculations; making and recording detailed observations; analyzing data; and preparing technical reports. Plan and conduct project tasks, accomplish goals, and occasionally lead proposal development and partnership-building to maintain and grow CAMP’s research portfolio. Train faculty and students to operate research equipment and oversee the utilization of data collection software and the maintenance of appropriate data archives.
Prepare service quotations, customer reports, and billing information for service projects. Supervise student workers, including hiring, training, and mentoring. Develop professional presentations, submit research papers to peer-reviewed journals, and prepare research proposals. Perform analysis using SEM, SEM-EDS, XRD, TGA, DSC, and FTIR, including sample preparation, automated mineralogical analysis, distillation using organic solvents, and wet chemical analysis as needed. Provide specialized training on highly sensitive and complex SEM instrumentation;
manage all internal client quotations and invoicing for CAMP services for Montana Tech graduate and undergraduate students; and ensure safe working conditions are maintained in CAMP laboratories.
- Bachelor’s of Science (B.S.) in geochemistry, materials science/engineering, or related field
- Minimum of 5 years laboratory experience or equivalent (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience)
- Proven experience training and mentoring students
- Proven experience working with data acquisition and archiving
- Experience in operation, imaging and analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and SEM with energy-dispersive X‑ray spectroscopy (SEM‑EDS)
- Experience in operation of an X‑ray diffractometer (XRD) and evaluation of diffractograms
- Possession of an M.S. degree or higher in the sciences or engineering, preferably in an area related to materials science
- Experience in operation of materials characterization techniques such as EBSD, TGA, DSC, FTIR, ICP‑OES and interpretation of generated data
- Capability to contribute to development of proposals that utilize CAMP’s facilities to maintain and grow CAMP’s research portfolio
- Experience with preparation of mineralogical samples for analysis using SEM‑based techniques and XRD
- Experience with various wet chemical analyses
